Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into whether there are recognized and practical alternatives to the IKEA Brimnes furniture, especially when used as a base for DIY projects. The Brimnes series seems quite popular due to its combination of price, materials, and ease of assembly, but I would like to know if there are comparable or even better models from other manufacturers or custom-built options that are more suitable for creative modifications or conversions. Perhaps someone has experience with other furniture that has similar dimensions, layouts, and materials but offers more flexibility in design or better stability? I look forward to your recommendations and tips!

Wow, that’s a great question! I also really like the Brimnes series, but there are definitely alternatives for DIY projects. Take a look at the Kallax shelves from IKEA—they’re fantastic for modifications and offer much more flexibility in terms of shelf sizes and inserts. Or you could try working with simple modular furniture from your local hardware store, where you can customize almost everything and aren’t limited by fixed dimensions. It’s really fun once you get the basics down and start getting creative. Don’t get discouraged; there are so many options! 🙂

Exactly! I can only agree with Garth here. The Brimnes furniture is great, but maybe a bit limited if you really want to build something custom. Take a look at Malm from IKEA – they are sturdy and have clean lines. For DIY projects, I like to customize wooden furniture from the hardware store; they are easy to paint or modify. Good luck and, above all, have fun building!

As an alternative, IKEA's Kallax units are good, sturdy, and versatile.

Additionally, simple shelving systems from the home improvement store are suitable for DIY projects.

An interesting question! When looking for alternatives to the Brimnes series, especially for DIY projects, you should consider the following aspects:

- Material quality: Brimnes is made of MDF with a foil coating, which is relatively easy to work with but not very resistant to moisture.
- Construction & modularity: It depends on how flexible the modules are and how easily dimensions can be adjusted or accessories integrated.

As practical alternatives, I recommend:

- Custom builds using plywood or solid wood panels: These materials are solid, stable, and can be easily processed further with simple tools.
- Modular and sturdy shelving systems from manufacturers like USM Haller or String, if cost is not the primary constraint.
- Hardware store systems such as III 25 or Element System, which are usually designed for flexible height and depth and offer a high load capacity.

It is also important to ask: What exactly do you want to modify or expand? Are you planning to integrate doors, drawers, sliding compartments, or lighting? I would also want to know if you are working alone or possibly with a workshop or assistance. Especially with Brimnes, the included screws are often too short for modifications, so you should pay attention to that.

How exactly are you planning your project?

For DIY projects, I always rely on Kallax shelves because they are sturdy and work well for modifications.

Brimnes, on the other hand, is too fragile for me and not as versatile.
