Hello everyone, I am currently working on a project where I need to disassemble and reassemble several Ikea Platsa furniture pieces. During this, I noticed the original PLATSA screws, which can be difficult to find as replacements and are sometimes considered not very durable.
My question: Are there alternatives to the standard Ikea PLATSA screws, especially ones that are higher quality or more robust but still compatible with the existing holes and materials? I am not looking for just any screws, but suitable options to securely and stably assemble the furniture, possibly made from better materials or with higher tensile strength.
Does anyone have experience or tips on which types of screws could be used as replacements here? I would also appreciate advice on specific dimensions, materials, or sources. Thank you!

For replacement, I would recommend using wood screws with a metric thread that exactly match the length and diameter of the original Ikea screws. Stainless steel or galvanized screws are more durable. It is important to choose a similar type of thread to avoid damaging the wood and particleboard.

My question: Are there alternatives to the standard Ikea PLATSA screws, particularly ones that are of better quality or more durable but still compatible with the existing holes and materials?Compatibility is indeed the critical point here. The original PLATSA panels are usually combined with particle boards, whose holes are often precisely matched to the plastic connectors and specific screw types. To find alternatives, I recommend the following systematic approach:
- First, identify the exact specifications of the original screws (length, diameter, thread type).
- Look for screws made of stainless steel or high-strength steel with identical dimensions to ensure better corrosion resistance and durability.
- Make sure the thread is fine enough not to split the particle board; in this case, special particle board screws are advisable.
- Instead of complete screws, you can also add metal connectors or small brackets from a hardware store if additional stability is needed.
From my experience, many replacement screws available at hardware stores work very well as long as the exact measurements are determined beforehand. Some users in online forums report that M4 or M5 particle board screws fit very well. Ultimately, it’s best to proceed carefully to avoid damaging the material.

In online forums, some users mention M4 or M5 chipboard screws that fit very well.If I may, I would disagree. I believe the whole discussion about supposedly good alternatives to Ikea screws is often overrated. Unlike conventional furniture, these screws are part of a modular system where everything is precisely coordinated.
Replacing them with just any other screws not only risks instability but can also potentially damage the furniture or affect the function of the joints. So why not simply opt for genuine Ikea system replacement parts? Sure, they may be more expensive and sometimes harder to get. But “alternatives” often imply equivalence, which in my experience is rarely the case.
Something to consider: Is it really sensible to rely on something else for such standardized furniture just because of supposedly better materials? If you want to spend money on better screws, you might as well invest in higher-quality furniture.
