Hello everyone, I recently purchased an Ikea Brimnes bathroom cabinet set and am generally satisfied, but some replacement parts like door hinges and drawer slides don’t fit perfectly — the tolerances seem a bit high and the assembly is not entirely intuitive. Therefore, my question to the community: Are there actually alternative parts for the Ikea Brimnes, meaning compatible replacement or upgrade parts from third-party suppliers that fit better and are of higher quality than the originals? I mean hinges, handles, but possibly also the rails or other fasteners. Perhaps some of you have had similar experiences or even recommendations for suitable alternatives. I look forward to your opinions and tips!

From my own experience, I can say that I have actually used some Blum hinges, which fit surprisingly well and make opening much smoother.I find that quite interesting, but honestly: wouldn’t it be better if Ikea produced something of higher quality from the start? After all, you pay a price that should correspond to the quality. Having to screw and tinker to get it ‘optimal’ is, to me, a sign that the product isn’t fully developed.
And who wants to keep upgrading constantly? I would argue that most people don’t do that and instead live with the limited original parts. To me, that doesn’t reflect smart product strategy, but rather acceptance of half-measures.
Here is an additional systematic overview:
- Hinges: Standard 35 mm (1.4 inches) drill hole; Blum and Grass hinges can be used as replacements, but the distance between mounting points on Brimnes is sometimes slightly different, which requires some adjustment effort.
- Drawer slides: Hettich Quadro V6 or Blum Tandembox are designed for soft-close and stability and can be installed with some modifications.
- Handles: Usually, a handle with the same screw spacing will fit. A tape measure is helpful.
A general statement like "better fitting alternative parts" is difficult because Ikea often uses custom dimensions. However, the products mentioned above are most commonly used by users as upgrades.

Wouldn’t it be better if Ikea produced something a bit higher quality right from the start? From an economic and manufacturing perspective, Ikea follows a cost-optimization model based on large volume production. This means the components meet the average expectations of many customers but are not part of the premium segment.

That you still have to screw and tinker to get it 'perfect' is, to me, a sign that the product isn’t fully developed. That is a factually accurate observation. Those with higher demands should be prepared to replace standard screws and parts. Alternative products are available on the market that offer better quality if needed.
Simplicity and modularity are at the core of Ikea’s philosophy. Brimnes is not custom-made but mass-produced.

I claim that most people don’t do that and instead make do with the limited original parts. That’s probably true! And that’s perfectly fine because most people just want an affordable, nice-looking piece of furniture that can be assembled quickly 😊. For tinkerers and fine-tuners like us, the idea of installing better hinges or handles is a small upgrade process that’s fun. Those who don’t need it simply leave it as is.
It’s like with a car: the base model drives just fine, but enthusiasts like to customize. And that’s totally relaxed! 😉
