Hello everyone,
I recently bought some Hemnes furniture from IKEA and noticed that the original fittings on some pieces seem a bit basic and not as durable as I would like. So, I’m wondering: Are there alternative fittings for IKEA Hemnes furniture that are, for example, more robust, longer-lasting, or visually more appealing? Ideally, they should be easy to install without much extra effort and at least match or exceed the original fittings in terms of functionality. I’m interested in hinges, handles, and other metal parts. Does anyone have experience or tips? Thanks in advance!

I can only confirm that alternative hardware fittings are feasible. Some users also replace the entire hardware systems with higher-quality ones. It is important to have precise preliminary measurements and to carefully review the installation instructions of the new hardware to avoid purchasing mistakes.

For example, there are some really cool design options for the handles that look great and are hardly more expensive. It’s not complicated once you know the drill hole measurements.

It is important that you carefully measure the dimensions of the existing drill holes before purchasing, so that you don’t buy the wrong fittings. Thanks for the tip, klo61. My drill holes are all 64mm (2.5 inches), which I recognize as the standard for handles. Are there also such standards for hinges that can be easily replaced, or is it more customized with Hemnes? What effort should I expect if I want to upgrade, for example, to soft-close hinges?

Are there standard hinges that you can easily buy as replacements, or is it more custom with Hemnes?Basically, there are some common standards for hinges, such as the 35mm (1 3/8 inch) drilling on the door panel for the hinge, but IKEA doesn’t always use the same types as other manufacturers. Hemnes mostly uses simple clip-on hinge solutions that you can replace with standard hinge arms with matching drilling patterns. Soft-close hinges usually include a damping function, which generally requires slightly more space due to their design. Therefore, you might need to adjust or make minor modifications to the door panel.
The effort depends on how well your existing material fits, but in most cases, it is easily doable.

Alternative hinges with soft-close functionality from manufacturers like Blum or Hettich can be installed after minimal adjustment of the drill holes. Thanks for the tip, RETRAVIS. How extensive is such a minimal adjustment in practice? Do you have to drill completely new holes or just slightly reposition existing ones? And how can I tell which hinge arm model fits best?
