Are there alternative baskets for the KALLAX?

I’m looking for baskets for the IKEA KALLAX shelving unit that are not only functional but also offer a different look than the original KALLAX baskets. The IKEA fabric baskets are a bit too plain and not very sturdy in my opinion, so I’m wondering if there are other options, maybe handmade or from other manufacturers, that fit easily into the standard KALLAX compartments.

It’s important to me that the baskets fit the dimensions (approximately 33x33x33 cm (13x13x13 inches) internal measurements) and are sturdy enough for everyday use. If anyone has experience, any links or tips on materials or sources would be very helpful.

Perhaps there are baskets made of wood, metal, or mixed materials? Or maybe a size slightly larger or smaller that still fits?

I welcome any ideas!

I feel the same way as Vinsan – I wanted something that not only looks nice but also emotionally resonates with me.

I spent a long time looking for baskets that I can customize myself and found that many "alternative" products often have better quality than the baskets from Ikea, but they tend to be a bit heavier. I don’t mind this because the baskets stay stable on the shelves and don’t slip easily.

Additionally, using natural materials gives me a good feeling. Especially nowadays, when sustainability is so important, I see this as a big advantage.

I’d be interested to know if others here also prefer sustainable alternatives!

In addition to the previous recommendations for alternative baskets, I can add the following:

For a sturdy yet flexible alternative, I recommend baskets made of plastic weaving. These are weather-resistant, easy to clean, and available in various colors.

When purchasing, pay close attention to the dimensions, as some suppliers offer models with variations of ±1 cm (±0.4 inches). Also, consider whether the basket has wheels or handles that might make sliding it in more difficult.

There are also modular plastic boxes that can be stacked and sometimes closed – an interesting option for organization and storage flexibility.

Hello everyone,

I agree with the general consensus that there are many attractive alternatives to the standard KALLAX baskets, which are often more practical as well.

If you prefer a cozy feel, you might want to consider baskets made of felt or fabric with leather handles. These give the shelving unit a modern, homely look and are usually very lightweight.

For those seeking sturdy storage, metal baskets or even small wooden boxes are ideal, though the latter don’t always fit perfectly.

My recommendation: If you are handy, you can also build custom wooden boxes or smaller containers that fit perfectly.

One last thing: The Ikea baskets are not bad, but with a bit of creativity, you can get the most out of them!

Absolutely right!

Personally, I love DIY projects, and a custom wooden basket for the KALLAX is a great way not only to create storage space but also to be creative.

Using thin plywood, wood glue, and some sandpaper, you can make nice, sturdy boxes that fit perfectly on the shelf. Then just add some paint or wood stain – done!

Sure, the IKEA baskets are convenient, but it’s really fun to make something yourself. Plus, you know exactly how much weight the box can hold. 😉

It is important to mention that when using fixed baskets, you should ensure that the baskets have no sharp edges that could damage the KALLAX. Several users have reported that wooden boxes without rounded edges or protective coatings can scratch the shelves.

With metal baskets, rounded corners or rubber feet are also essential to prevent scratches.

Therefore, I recommend either buying baskets with protective features or applying some padding, such as bubble wrap or felt, at the contact points yourself. This protects the furniture and also makes it more durable.

I hope this helps those interested in sturdy alternatives!

I can definitely confirm this!

I initially ordered cheaper wooden boxes and had to be very careful when pulling them out, otherwise they would cause scratches. That’s why I added felt strips to the edges, and now everything runs smoothly.

Wishing you all a good morning 🙂
