Hello everyone,
I would like to start a discussion about senior-friendly furnishing using the Ikea PLATSA system. My question is: Are there practical and ergonomically designed furnishing tips with PLATSA that specifically address the needs of older people?
I am particularly interested in aspects such as ease of use, accessibility, safety, and possibly barrier-free modifications using PLATSA modules or accessories.
Perhaps you have direct experience with PLATSA shelves or cabinets in homes of older individuals or can offer suggestions for useful alterations that help make daily life easier and reduce the risk of falls.
Thank you in advance for your feedback!

Thierryzar4 Jul 2023 07:31I used PLATSA for my mother by combining cabinets that are 90cm (35 inches) high with drawers. Good handles were important—no large knobs, better to use bar handles. Also, make sure the floor stays clear, as this makes cleaning easier and is also a safety consideration.

How do you handle ergonomics with handles? Are they often replaced? In practice, handles are rarely replaced if ergonomically suitable bar handles are chosen during the initial setup. Alternatively, handles that can be operated with minimal effort are recommended.

One should not only talk about safety but also about feel and aesthetics. That is a crucial point. Functionality and design do not have to exclude each other. Especially for seniors, an appealing design can positively influence well-being from a psychological perspective.
In summary: For age-appropriate furnishing with PLATSA, cabinet heights should preferably be under 1.20 m (4 feet), easy-to-operate handles used, furniture securely fixed, and the overall design kept visually friendly and clearly structured.
