Hello everyone,
I have a question that might be interesting for some of you: The IKEA Kallax shelf unit comes standard with square compartments and fixed pre-drilled holes for the shelves. Are there ways to use or modify these holes so that the compartments can also accommodate other types of shelves or accessories that are not originally designed for Kallax?
Specifically, I mean whether it’s possible to adapt the existing holes for flexible use, for example, to attach other systems like metal rails, brackets, or special inserts that are normally not planned for.
I’ve considered whether using special dowels, adapters, or additional drilling could work without compromising stability. Does anyone have experience or recommended solutions? Maybe also tips on what to avoid to keep the unit stable. Thanks in advance for your opinions!

whether the existing holes can be adapted for flexible useThe holes are primarily designed for the included anchors. If you want to attach other systems, it is advisable to drill new holes in suitable locations.
However, be careful with the dimensions and stability, as Kallax material is not very thick.
The Kallax is actually quite a versatile unit, but its holes are designed nicely for the intended shelves, not necessarily for custom modifications. 😉
If you approach it creatively, that might work. For example, you could make small adapters from plastic or metal that fit exactly into the holes and allow you to attach other components. This way, stability is maintained, and you can create something unique.
However, I wouldn’t just expand the holes without a plan. The Kallax material isn’t the strongest – keep that in mind.
But hey, with a bit of DIY fun, you can definitely create something cool. Good luck!

The important thing is that the adapters fit correctly and that the wood isn’t damaged in the process. Otherwise, the stability will suffer. So take your time, and it will work fine.
