Hello dear forum community,

We are currently building a single-family house in the northern Ruhr area. The roofing will be installed within the next two weeks.
Can anyone provide information on whether it is now mandatory to install storm clips throughout the roof when laying the roofing? And if so, could this involve an additional cost? The roof is a gable roof with a 48° pitch, covered with clay roof tiles from the company ABC.

Thank you in advance for your answers.

Best regards,
Markusch

So our prefabricated house supplier partially stapled the bricks. Apparently (according to the site manager) this is mandatory in Rhineland-Palatinate. It is quite possible that there are regulations on this. What does the state building code say about it?

Hi,

I can’t tell you whether storm ties are mandatory. However, I wouldn’t even question it. If the extra cost isn’t exorbitantly high (for example, under 500 euros), I would value future safety more. Weather extremes have also increased in Germany, and I want to make sure I still have a roof over my house after the next strong breeze.

I do not believe this is explicitly defined as a fixed legal requirement; however, all parties involved must comply with the current technical building regulations according to § 3 of the state building code. Excerpt:

(1) Structural works as well as other facilities and installations within the meaning of § 1 para. 1 sentence 2 must be designed, constructed, altered, and maintained in such a way that public safety or order, in particular life, health, or natural living conditions, is not endangered.

I interpret this—without claiming to be completely accurate—that depending on the location of the building and the prevailing wind conditions, the roofer must take appropriate measures.

You will pay for it either way—whether it is included in the initial quote or agreed upon later. No one can reliably estimate how much the costs might be since we do not know your provider’s calculation.
