Hello everyone,

I have always liked roof terraces, even when you have a garden and a patio. However, I have also heard some negative opinions lately. I am therefore interested to know, if you have already built one, whether you think your roof terrace was a good investment.

Best regards

I don’t have one myself, but I’m also a bit of a fan of the idea. However, there are a few “conditions” that would have to be met for me to consider building a roof terrace.

Firstly, there would need to be little or no space available in the garden or on the ground. Secondly, the ground-level terrace would be visible to everyone (personally, I don’t like feeling like I’m on display). The ground-level location would be poor. The terrace on the ground wouldn’t be particularly inviting or cozy for some reason.

For me, the roof terrace would basically need to be connected to the kitchen. After all, you don’t want to carry everything from the ground floor (where the kitchen is normally located) all the way up to the roof. Just think about grilling with family or friends. A bathroom/WC on the same floor would likely not be an issue.

It would also be important to me that the roof terrace can be reached without having to go through a bedroom, for example. This might not be relevant for the residents, but I wouldn’t want to always have to lead friends, family, or distant acquaintances through my bedroom.

Then the roof terrace should offer something special—a nice view over the village or town, a private spot not overlooked by others, full evening sun, and so on.

In general, I think most people will build the terrace at ground level. That also makes the most sense and is more cost-effective. Usually, garden design or landscaping also allows the terrace to become a cozy and relaxing place. Only if this is not feasible would I consider a roof terrace, even though I do enjoy such “quirky” options.

A sunny spot to relax for an hour or two can also be created with a balcony.

I would never want to build without a roof terrace on the banks of the Rhine or Elbe, but in my opinion, you don’t need one for the Bielefeld skyline.

I have a 30sqm (323 sqft) roof terrace, which I use every Sunday for breakfast. Every barbecue with friends (held on the garden terrace) also ends there. In short: I wouldn’t want to miss it.

I don’t have one... but I would like to have one.

I completely agree with @garfunkel.
Another argument against a roof terrace on a single-family house: in my garden, I am hidden from view by a hedge and plants... on the roof terrace, I would probably be sitting there on display.

If I had a penthouse apartment in downtown Hamburg, I would definitely want a roof terrace.
