Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into whether IKEA PAX wardrobes are generally suitable for long-term storage. The reason is that I have a room where I want to store larger quantities of various materials over several years. The PAX series is quite popular because it is flexible and cost-effective. However, I am wondering if it can meet the requirements of long-term storage in terms of stability, moisture resistance, and load capacity.

Has anyone had experience using PAX wardrobes for long-term purposes? I am especially interested in how they hold up after about 3-5 years with regard to the load on the shelves, hinges, and surfaces. It is also important to know if moisture has any negative effects or if the construction remains stable with infrequent use.

Thanks in advance for your informed feedback!

PAX wardrobes are suitable for long-term storage as long as they are not overloaded.

- Ensure even weight distribution
- Keep moisture levels minimal, as excess moisture can damage the material
- Regular inspections are recommended

This is a very important question that many will find relevant. PAX wardrobes are made from particleboard coated with a laminate film, which is primarily designed for indoor use in dry environments.

For long-term storage, this means:

- Load capacity: The shelves can sag over time if subjected to consistently heavy loads, especially when heavy items are placed across large areas. It is advisable to use support bars or distribute the weight across multiple shelves.

- Hinges and fittings: These are functional and sturdy but are not necessarily designed for frequent loading and unloading. After several years, they may become loose, especially if exposed to moisture.

- Moisture: The laminate coating offers some protection against light moisture, but prolonged exposure to humidity causes the particleboard to swell and the surface to deteriorate. Therefore, PAX wardrobes are generally not suitable for long-term storage in damp basements or similar areas.

My recommendation: If you want to use PAX, ensure a dry environment with controlled humidity and avoid overloading the shelves. Regular maintenance of hinges and occasional tightening of screws is also advisable.

What are the conditions of your storage area? Are temperature fluctuations or sources of moisture expected?

Exactly, and this is where I see the problem with PAX wardrobes as a long-term solution. Many rely on them because PAX is relatively affordable and modern-looking, but they forget the material properties and load limits.

I believe that anyone planning to store items long-term should invest in more durable solutions that remain stable even with irregular maintenance and changing environmental conditions.

For long-term storage in humid basement rooms, PAX is therefore rather unsuitable.

We should also keep in mind that many storage rooms do not have optimal climate control. Since PAX is based on particleboard, such environments quickly become a risk.

Perhaps this is a classic case of appearance over substance.

What good is a nice cabinet if after 3 years the shelves sag and the surface starts to peel? So, be careful when choosing storage solutions!
