Hello everyone,
As the title suggests, I wanted to check who has experience with painting services at this stage. We have received a quote for our 135 m² (1453 sq ft) single-family house of about €14,000 including materials. They plan to apply so-called fleece wallpaper to the walls, which seems to be quite popular nowadays.
In my opinion, the price is still quite high.
Can anyone offer some advice?

A fleece membrane is often requested to prevent settlement cracks, which occur in every house, from becoming visible on the wall. Unfortunately, the scope of work is unclear, so it is difficult to determine whether this is expensive or affordable.

What do you need to know about the scope of work? Sanding walls, priming, wallpapering, and painting. Material: Xtravlies 1725 from Brillux (according to the quote, €14 per square meter (approximately $14 per square yard) for the fleece).

That’s at least 400 m² (4,300 sq ft) of surface area the painter has to cover. More likely around 500 m² (5,400 sq ft).

Sanding, possibly filling in and sanding again is really tough work. The fleece is similar to wallpapering, except that ceiling wallpapering is rarely practiced by amateurs. It’s also quite laborious, especially in galleries and stairwells. Then there’s priming and the actual painting. The last step, and only that one, is what laypeople understand as “painting work,” because that’s the only part they’re familiar with!

The cost is about 30 to 35 euros per m². Is that too expensive for you? Alternatively, you could work with three others for 10 to 14 days, but you should still budget at least 2,000 euros for materials and tools.

Or you can have everything done up to the fleece application, then prime and paint yourself. That’s doable with four people over a long weekend and can save you several thousand euros. Check the related items in the offer.

I don’t need to know anything else. If you want an estimate, it is helpful to describe the scope of work as precisely as possible; otherwise, it’s like asking, “How much does a 4.8-meter (16 feet) long car with a 190 kW (255 hp) engine cost?”
Are ceilings included or just walls? Basement? Stairwell? Number of floors? Scaffold required? Interior only? ...

It concerns only the interior area, but completely. This includes the ceilings as well. Room height is approximately 2.5m (8 feet 2 inches). We do not have a basement, and the attic will remain untouched. The house is one and a half stories with a gable roof.
