Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into whether Kallax storage boxes made of felt are actually more durable than those made of plastic. I am less interested in appearance or feel, and more focused on how robust the materials are with long-term use.

In my opinion, felt boxes might be more resistant to minor damage due to their flexible structure, whereas plastic could become brittle or develop cracks under heavy load. On the other hand, felt might wear out faster due to moisture or heavy use.

Does anyone have experience or perhaps long-term user feedback with both types? How do the boxes compare in everyday use regarding quality, signs of wear, and maintenance effort?

Thank you in advance!

I agree, that’s been my experience too! My felt boxes from Kallax still look great after two years, with no bubbles or cracks. The plastic boxes, on the other hand, show signs of wear quite quickly, especially on the corners. However, plastic is easier to clean if something gets spilled.

A small tip: felt doesn’t like moisture, so avoid using it in very damp environments 🙂 Other than that, felt boxes are really durable, handle everyday use well, and still look cozy. 😉

In short: Felt is more flexible, resistant to tearing, but absorbs more dirt. Plastic is more durable when exposed to moisture but often becomes brittle in cold temperatures.

Regarding the durability of Kallax storage boxes, the following should be noted:

Felt is often made from polyester or wool fiber blends, which provide a certain level of flexibility and better cushioning against impacts. This can reduce mechanical stress. However, felt is less resistant to moisture and dirt, which may limit its lifespan with frequent use in damp environments.

Plastic boxes are usually made from polypropylene (PP) or similar materials, which are highly resistant to moisture and easy to clean. The downside is that plastic can become brittle over time, especially when exposed to UV radiation or significant temperature fluctuations.

In indoor environments with normal climate conditions, felt boxes will likely maintain their appearance longer if handled carefully, while plastic boxes tolerate more robust use but show signs of material fatigue faster due to aging.

That is correct. Additionally, it should be noted that the durability also depends on the construction and workmanship.

Felt boxes have no sharp edges, which makes them less prone to material fractures, but they tend to lose their shape more easily under heavy loads. Plastic boxes retain their shape better but are more susceptible to breaking under stress.

Conclusion: Felt boxes are durable for moderate use and aesthetic purposes, while plastic is preferable for heavy loads and damp environments.

In addition to the previous explanations:

A study on material fatigue in the area of storage showed that felt materials, due to their fiber density, can better prevent abrasion but tend to bulge more quickly under uneven load. Plastic, on the other hand, demonstrates better resistance to deformation, but small micro-cracks can expand under stress, which shortens the service life.

The choice therefore depends on the application: If weight and frequent redecorating are the priorities, felt boxes are advantageous due to their flexibility. For heavy or damp storage, plastic boxes are the more durable option.
