ᐅ Are "floor-to-ceiling windows" on the ground floor the same as "patio doors"?

Dear forum,

A comment in another thread made me realize that my husband and I might have made a mistake when ordering our prefab house. As laypeople, we thought that "floor-to-ceiling windows" were the same as "patio doors" that allow easy level access to the garden. Is that wrong? If so, do you know the advantages and disadvantages of "floor-to-ceiling windows" compared to "patio doors," and what the approximate additional cost might be if we switch to "patio doors" later on (for example, during the selection phase)?

There is still a frame around it here as well.
Truly floor-to-ceiling glazing would have glass reaching all the way down to the floor.

I would only install floor-to-ceiling windows on the ground floor where they are intended as terrace doors. These exits are more convenient with so-called flat thresholds. Exits with flat thresholds on level floors without drainage channels in between carry the risk of water ingress. We had this threshold discussion during the failed project by Räuber, see https://www.hausbau-forum.de/threads/grundrissplanung-kurz-vor-bauantragsstellung.25647/page-143#post-269476 (just as a rough reference point, the topic continued over several pages).

We only have a flush threshold at the main exit door leading to the terrace. All other doors have a standard frame. With the flush threshold, going in and out is much more comfortable. However, it also allows more dirt to enter the house.

Floor-to-ceiling windows could, in the worst case, be fixed panes, which would make going outside quite difficult.
In that case, we can always rely on teleportation. Seriously though, thanks for pointing that out; it was something we hadn’t considered. When I thought of windows, I always assumed they could be opened. It seems our prefabricated house order might still hold a few surprises for us. Well, no matter what, the new house will at least be livable.
