We are building with a general contractor, and the standard tiles offered are 30x60cm (12x24 inches). However, we would prefer a wood-look tile in the size 30x120cm (12x48 inches). We need to negotiate the additional cost with the tiler. We have now received the extra charge: the tiler is asking for €26.30 per m² (excluding VAT) for installation. I understand that it takes longer to lay these tiles, but €26.30 per m² (about €30 including VAT) seems quite expensive to me. The tiler also installed the screed.
Am I mistaken here?
Looking forward to your feedback.

Am I mistaken here? No. In proportion, that’s not expensive. The effort increases exponentially with how much more precisely the work must be carried out and the substrate prepared to ensure the tiles don’t crack or end up uneven in height. This is not apprentice-level work; it requires master-level skills and therefore costs accordingly.

For the same scenario, we paid about twice as much extra. But with just a few square meters of tiles, it hardly makes a difference. We have about 120 square meters (1300 square feet) to tile, so price is definitely something to watch.
Best regards,
Sabine
