ᐅ Have the plans drawn up by an architect or a construction company? Costs?

Hello experienced building experts,
we are currently in the early planning phase for our single-family home. Construction is planned to start in spring 2015.
At the moment, we are working on the layout of our floor plan and have found an architect couple who design single-family homes that very much match our ideas.
We have already contacted them. They would draw up the plans for us, but they cannot take on the construction management because they are too far away, so we would need to find a local construction company anyway.
Is it financially worthwhile to hire an architect at all? How much does it usually cost if they only draw the plans? Do you have any experience?

We had our plans created by an independent draftsman. He is a trained master bricklayer, works full-time for the building authority, and part-time as a draftsman and energy consultant.
For about €3000, he provided the following services:
Preparation of the submission plan
Preparation of the drainage plan
Preliminary building permit application (with all necessary documents)
Building permit application (with all necessary documents)
Energy consulting including energy certificate
We are completely satisfied with his work! Before that, we consulted two architects who were purely theoretical and not familiar with practical matters. This does not mean that there are no good architects out there; we just had a bad experience personally. Architects usually charge according to the HOAI (Official Scale of Fees for Services by Architects and Engineers). You can roughly estimate the likely planning costs online using an HOAI calculator (at least a rough estimate is possible).
