ᐅ Fall protection for open spaces using safety nets (catamaran system)

Hello!

We have an open space of about 12 square meters (130 square feet) in the house and would like to combine comfort with functionality by installing a net similar to those used on catamarans (see picture). However, one of the long sides borders the conservatory, so the net cannot be attached there. We are considering a metal frame to which the net would be fastened, with the frame only screwed into the remaining opening area (timber frame construction).

Has anyone already done something like this? One company gave us only a standard response regarding mounting, and we are still waiting for a reply from another company. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you and best regards

Faydie

I find the idea very interesting and think it’s a pity that most comments here are just opposing it instead of providing helpful advice.

Concerns are of course useful as well! But I assume you have already done enough research beforehand?

Personally, I would also talk to a metalworker who can build the frame for you. The mounting on the other sides (not the conservatory side) must also be checked for sufficient load-bearing capacity.

Try to find reference projects nearby through the internet.

Hi,
I also think the idea is really cool, but I’m more of a hammock person anyway.
What if you had a wooden frame built? That would probably fit better with the rest.
Or you could stretch a steel cable between the two corners where the net can be threaded on.

… but have the manufacturer explain that to you again. It’s not that straightforward.

I still find the idea interesting and don’t understand why people have to criticize it so much. It’s just unusual. Do you already have an idea of the cost, also compared to a traditional parapet?

The net itself is not expensive. I expect it to cost a maximum of 400 euros. As for the mounting, it probably depends on how it is fixed in place. The carpenter is coming on Wednesday anyway to cover the air space (I hope this makes sense). Maybe he can help me with this or tell me what a wooden mounting frame would cost.

Not necessarily my style, but quite funny...

We are planning an open space above the dining area, so my question is: what do you have underneath it?
If it’s also the dining area, I would simply be concerned about things occasionally falling into the food.

Otherwise, I also think the key point is the suspension.
Since the idea obviously comes from sailing, how about asking a boat builder?

Quick update: Due to our space situation, we would have needed a continuous steel frame. Cost: 5500 euros. We decided against it because of the cost :-/
