Hello everyone,

We have now talked to several companies about house construction, and regarding heating systems, opinions seem to differ quite a bit. Here are the different statements we have received:

Air source heat pump
Annual costs between 400 - 800 euros
Efficient down to -25°C (−13°F)
Efficiency drops to zero below -15°C (5°F)

Ground source heat pump
With horizontal ground collectors
Very efficient
More expensive
Ground becomes too cold
Ice layer forms
Plants die

We are a bit unsure what to believe now.

4 people in total, 2 are in favor of air source heat pumps and 2 for ground source heat pumps...

Who has experience with these types of systems? Especially regarding maintenance costs.

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

We are currently building and faced the same decision. Since our plot is only 750 sqm (8,073 sq ft) and we might want to add a greenhouse, garage, trees, or similar in the coming years, and because using a ground source heat pump with horizontal collectors is almost impossible here, we opted for an air source heat pump. The collector area would have covered the entire open space.

The price difference is also significant. Ground source heat with deep drilling is much more expensive and was therefore not an option at all.

You can’t really generalize this. The basic conditions deserve some input from €uro ;-)

There is also the outdoor unit that has to be installed somewhere (ugly & noisy). I initially ordered an air-source heat pump but changed to drilling-based for 4000 euros. It’s worth it to me to have more efficiency AND no outdoor unit.

Our air source heat pump is installed indoors. Alphainnotec is the manufacturer. Four expensive drilling attempts sound reasonable. What about the effort involved with a test drilling permit/planning permission? That must not be forgotten.

Nonsense 😀

I have it in writing! I don’t know what exactly was charged for the air source heat pump since it’s a total price without any breakdown, but I’m really only paying an extra 4200€ (about 4500 USD) now.
