Hello,

Our electrician made me a bit uncertain when he mentioned that the heat pump will get its own meter so the utility provider can supply it with electricity when there is surplus available. This might make sense, as the cost per kWh will probably be lower than the kWh the washing machine uses from the household electricity.

What is not ideal: where is the photovoltaic system supposed to feed its electricity? With this setup, you cannot run both the heat pump and the washing machine on your own solar power (as long as the sun provides it).

From what I have read so far, it should be possible to operate the heat pump on the household electricity supply (as long as the utility provider agrees to it).

This would be my preferred solution. What do you think?

It is called the energy saving regulation lock.

We have it at 9:00 AM for 30 minutes and again at 6:30 PM for 30 minutes.
Currently, our provider is EnBW, but we will definitely switch again.

I can’t give you a direct answer regarding how this interacts with photovoltaic systems.

You probably don’t plan to use an excessive amount of electricity with the heat pump. However, without data on consumption and electricity costs, no one can tell you if it’s actually worth it.

If the second meter costs 120 euros per year as a basic fee and you pay 3 cents less per kWh for the heat pump electricity, you would need to consume at least 4,000 kWh (4,400 kWh) just to start saving money.

If you also have a photovoltaic system, the second meter becomes even less cost-effective.

Keep in mind that the heat pump always uses electricity when the sun isn’t providing much power. Also, the heat pump requires a short burst of high electricity consumption.

Here is a typical heat pump consumption profile. Photovoltaic power does not help at all with the gray peaks.

@toxicmolotow

How long does your photovoltaic system need to operate before the purchase costs are covered by the savings or income generated by the system?

Without making any assumptions, there is no answer to that. All other things being equal, about 10–11 years. Overall, however, I expect it to be significantly sooner. The important point for now is that, at the moment, the overall cost is essentially the same.
