ᐅ Air-to-Air or Air-to-Water Heat Pump?

Hello,

I am currently planning my construction project for an urban villa (KfW40+) with about 140m² (1507 sq ft) plus a waterproof basement.

I have four prefabricated house companies (timber frame construction) to choose from, all of which have different opinions regarding the heating technology.

A water pump is the only option that makes sense, that much is clear. Everything else does not seem reasonable.

However, I am undecided between a Proxon system (air-to-air) and an air-to-water heat pump.

The Proxon heating system has a somewhat poor reputation, based on what I have read in various other forums.

Are there any experiences or tips regarding the heating technology? What are your recommendations? Is it also possible to have the heating system installed externally by a heating company and exclude the prefabricated house provider? Has anyone had experience with this? What are your general experiences or approaches with prefabricated house companies regarding heating technology?

I would appreciate any advice.

Kind regards

Simon

I believe almost all manufacturers like Weberhaus, Rensch-Haus, etc. offer this heating system (Proxon) with cooling function as a standard option. That’s all I wanted to say!

Since when has Rensch-Haus been offering Proxon?
In 2017, no timber frame builder offered it to us.
I don’t know anyone who has a timber frame house with Proxon.

Then the Proxon sales team must have really put in a lot of effort. Streif House, Bien-Zenker, Hanse Haus are also included. And with all the providers we talked to, the heating system is also being promoted....

Switching to an air-to-water heat pump with underfloor heating is no problem.

I believe many companies include the heating system because it is affordable (no need for underfloor heating), which gives the company an economic advantage. Conversely, if many companies offer it as part of their portfolio, they can provide it and don’t face an economic disadvantage due to the more expensive underfloor heating.

Whether it makes sense to save money here and end up with a significantly inferior heating system is another matter.

Hello, we had also considered timber frame construction at one point. After researching heating options, we ruled it out. The additional cost for underfloor heating with an air-to-water heat pump was minimal.

What surprised me was that it included cooling for the summer as well. Cooling wouldn’t normally be available with an air-to-water heat pump. So does the house get too hot in summer, making cooling necessary? Or is it just a nice gimmick?

We have now switched to solid construction for other reasons.

Best regards, Anna

Okay, understood! Could you also share the reasons why you decided to switch to solid construction?

With Hanse, I can’t quickly find anything, but Albert Haus, Rensch-Haus, Wolf Haus, and Schwörerhaus all still offer air-to-water heat pumps.
