Hello everyone,

I have an issue with my Kallax shelving unit from IKEA: After moving the entire unit slightly, the sliding doors no longer move smoothly and easily along their tracks.

The doors keep catching, sometimes bump lightly against the frame, and are no longer as easy to slide as before. It feels like the rollers are not guided properly or may be getting stuck.

Could this be caused by the tracks warping, or might it be a problem with the rollers themselves?

Has anyone experienced something similar? And what can be done to restore the doors’ smooth operation?

I look forward to your tips and suggestions!

What really helped me was thoroughly cleaning the rollers and tracks again, then applying a little silicone spray to the running tracks.

That sounds like a great tip! Especially when mechanical parts start feeling "stiff" after extended use, a little maintenance like that can really make a difference.

Also, the problem is definitely frustrating. But small maintenance tasks are often key to long-term durability. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

For technical clarification:

Kallax sliding doors run on plastic rollers guided by small metal axles. The tracks themselves are thin, painted metal profiles. If these are slightly bent or not installed perfectly level, the guiding force of the rollers decreases significantly.

Additionally, thermal effects, material fatigue, and dirt accumulation impair smooth operation.

Proper installation of the tracks with exact alignment is essential. It is also recommended to occasionally check the roller axles for secure fit and mobility.

In short: The problem often results from a combination of track deformation and blocked or misaligned rollers.

Here is a simple step-by-step guide to systematically address the problem:

1. Check the shelf with a spirit level to ensure it is not wobbling or tilted.

2. Remove the doors from the tracks, if possible.

3. Inspect the sliding tracks – count any small dents or bends, which should be smoothed out, repaired, or replaced.

4. Check the roller units: make sure they rotate freely, clean the axles if necessary, and apply light oil.

5. Carefully remount the tracks along with the rollers, ensuring proper alignment.

6. Perform a function test: the door should glide smoothly without resistance.

A common issue is that when moving the shelf, either the tracks press against the floor causing distortion, or the doors become misaligned during movement.

If there is no improvement despite all these steps, worn parts may be present, requiring roller replacement.

Good luck with this!
