Hello everyone,

I recently moved and reassembled my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit. Unfortunately, I noticed that some small parts are missing – specifically the small dowels, spacers, and connecting screws that are necessary for stable assembly. The original packaging of the KALLAX components is no longer complete, as I combined different shelving parts.

I’m wondering if anyone has experience replacing these small parts without having to buy the entire piece of furniture again. Are there comparable replacement parts available from third-party suppliers, or is it better to contact IKEA directly?

Perhaps you also have tips on how to accurately identify the missing small parts by description or model number, so I don’t have to spend hours searching at the hardware store.

I look forward to your suggestions and thank you in advance!

Hi juclaudia!

Oh, I know that all too well! After my move, a few screws and wall plugs for my KALLAX shelf also went missing – it almost feels like they vanished into thin air 🙂

The great thing is: you can often order replacement parts directly from IKEA, and it's usually completely free! Just look up the item numbers on the IKEA website or call the store, and they’ll usually send the small parts quickly.

If that doesn’t work, it’s worth checking out hardware stores or online shops that sell specialized furniture connector kits. These are often compatible.

So: stay positive and don’t give up, this kind of thing is easy to fix! 🙂 Good luck!

Very good question! The small parts for the KALLAX are indeed quite specific, but there are a few approaches you can take:

1. Identification: The best way is to check the IKEA assembly instructions for the exact names and dimensions of the connectors. These usually include part numbers that you will need for ordering replacements.

2. Replacement parts from IKEA: IKEA often provides replacement components for furniture upon request—either online or through customer service at the store. I recommend starting here since the parts are precisely matched to the furniture.

3. Alternative solution at hardware stores/online: If that’s not possible, you can try using standard wooden dowels (usually 8 mm diameter) and cam locks. Make sure to check the exact measurements; otherwise, the parts won’t fit properly.

4. Tools for a custom fit replacement: Sometimes missing parts can be supplemented with furniture tape or small metal brackets, especially for non-load-bearing elements.

If you want, feel free to write back with the exact parts that are missing (ideally with names from the instructions), and I can offer more specific advice.

You can often reorder spare parts from IKEA completely free of charge!

That’s true – IKEA is usually very accommodating in this regard. I recommend finding your KALLAX product code (usually on the assembly instructions or directly on the furniture piece) and then ordering the spare parts either through IKEA customer service or the online store.

If you need extra dowels or screws: sometimes you can simply check the packaging of similar items, as the parts list is often included there. This way, you’ll know exactly which dimensions are important.

In case you need something quickly: a well-stocked hardware store often carries relatively universal dowels and connectors. However, the fit is not always 100% perfect, so it’s best to measure carefully beforehand – sometimes a minor difference can cause problems.

If you have any questions about assembly, I’m happy to give you a brief overview of the most commonly used connectors for KALLAX.

I would reorder small KALLAX parts directly from IKEA. They usually send replacement parts free of charge.

If it's urgent, look for proper dowels and connectors at the hardware store. Use the measurements from the original parts!

Important: Do not choose screws that are too long, as this can cause the wood to split.

I would like to add a supplementary note: Make sure that the screws and wall plugs not only match the dimensions but also the quality required for your furniture parts. KALLAX mostly uses particleboard, which can crack if screws are too long or too thick.

Therefore, when using replacement parts from a hardware store, I recommend carefully reviewing the product datasheets or, if in doubt, contacting IKEA customer service. They often provide not only original parts but also advice on the proper handling.

If you have the article numbers of the missing parts, the service can usually assist you quickly and accurately.

If you are interested, I can also provide a list of possible replacement parts with the most important measurements and alternatives.
