ᐅ Advantages and Disadvantages: External Venetian Blinds or Roller Shutters?

Hello!
We are considering whether to choose Venetian blinds or roller shutters.
Originally, I preferred roller shutters because they seem to offer better burglary protection. However, an architect advised us against this, saying that roller shutters can also be easily broken into. He believes that with almost the same level of burglary protection, Venetian blinds are much more comfortable and provide greater flexibility.
So far, we have only had roller shutters or interior blinds, so we lack direct comparisons.
Do you also think that roller shutters are not significantly "safer" than Venetian blinds?
Can you think of other pros and cons?

Everything has its pros and cons, but ideally, none of these solutions should be necessary. All necessary shading systems are just expensive stopgaps. The best approach is to address it through construction methods or natural shading.
Venetian blinds (or external blinds) are difficult to clean, operate very slowly, so they are usually kept closed, and they are quite expensive. To be honest, they give off a strong industrial building vibe. Nothing is worse than large glass facades with those things always down.
That’s why I tend to prefer roller blinds.
However, roller blinds also have drawbacks on large windows, as has already been mentioned here.

So, it’s not that roller shutters are Fort Knox, but I believe they do pose more of a barrier than venetian blinds. I watched the video from the police advisory service: The burglar yanks the entire roller shutter out of the guide rails in one swift motion and throws it aside; they don’t even try to lift or push anything up.

If venetian blinds have to stay up during strong winds, that’s definitely a downside for us. The question is, how strong should the wind be? Our largest venetian blind measures 4.55 m x 2.33 m (15 ft x 7.6 ft) according to the drawings, and during the last strong winds it didn’t bother it at all (still in the guide rails).

We have venetian blinds 2.6 m (8.5 ft) wide, and even in storms, nothing shakes so far—just minimal rattling. => Yes, I can confirm that, see above.

The manufacturer only requires a wind sensor for venetian blinds over a certain width. => Interesting, which manufacturer is that? It can’t be Warema.

Roller shutters only provide burglary protection to the extent that they add another noise barrier when breaking in. Otherwise, there are disheartening videos about roller shutters online. => I completely agree, otherwise you might as well buy an iron curtain like a jeweler uses on display windows.
Some additional advantages of venetian blinds that come to my mind (just personal impressions):
a) You can leave the windows open in the rain without water coming inside and still enjoy fresh air (depends on the correct angle setting)
b) You can keep the windows wide open all day without neighborhood cats getting inside or anyone gaining silent access
c) You can create beautiful lighting effects inside the room ))
One option would be textile shading. It is somewhat more wind-resistant than Venetian blinds and, depending on the fabric, can also provide complete darkness. Venetian blinds allow the best control of light, which can also be automated. Nevertheless, we will choose textile shading for other reasons.
Our neighbor has external venetian blinds.
Last week, they were constantly rolled up, which surprised us. We had windy weather, and they were on vacation. Everything was open because of the automation system.
The nice thing is that they provide privacy while still letting light through.
They also look better. But is the extra cost worth it?

Venetian blinds are hard to clean, very slow, and therefore almost always kept down, and very expensive. That’s a bit of a generalization. Our Venetian blinds have fast-running motors and they operate faster than any roller shutter going up or down.
Do they have to win a race or something?? It’s crazy what people worry about here.
And whether they go up in the wind or not... they just go down again once they are allowed to.
Neither a roller shutter nor a venetian blind will stop a burglar!
I always like it when all the neighbors put their roller shutters down at the same time; you instantly know they are on vacation^^
