Good morning,
We are watching American renovation shows again. I keep noticing that in the US, roofing tiles like the ones used here are not common; instead, asphalt shingles are used. This made me wonder why they are not also used in Germany.
From what I found on Google so far, asphalt shingles are cheaper and lighter but have a shorter lifespan (25–35 years). How long does a "classic" roof last? They are also said to be quieter in the rain.
I am also wondering if photovoltaic panels can be mounted on them. Would the protection possibly extend their durability?

I have shingles on my garden shed. Everything is watertight.

Americans tend to build cheaply but on a large scale.
You’ll just have to reroof after 25 years. Roof tiles last until you no longer like them or until you pass away.

Shingles only look good to a limited extent.

So for a garden shed, it’s acceptable, but for a new house, you can surely imagine something more attractive.
