Hello everyone, I assembled my Billy bookcase last weekend, and now the doors are not aligning perfectly. The hinges seem a bit loose, and either the doors don’t close flush or they hang slightly crooked. My question is: How can I properly adjust the hinges on a BILLY bookcase to get the doors perfectly aligned again? Is there a trick or detailed instructions on how to do this, especially for someone who doesn’t assemble furniture often? It would be great if you could help me with a step-by-step guide, maybe with tips on the screws and things to avoid. Thanks in advance!

You can usually adjust the BILLY hinges with three screws: one on the side for horizontal positioning, one at the top/bottom for vertical positioning, and one that adjusts the door’s depth. Simply turn with a Phillips screwdriver until the door is properly aligned.

Hello bamar, I can completely understand your situation; I’ve experienced the same with my own BILLY shelves. When adjusting the hinges, it’s important to proceed step by step. First, slightly open the door and focus on one of the three screws—usually the one on the side, as it adjusts the horizontal alignment. Turn it only in small quarter turns and observe how the door moves. Then adjust the vertical screw on the shelf frame to fine-tune the height. The third screw controls the depth, meaning how close the door fits against the cabinet body.

If that doesn’t work, check whether the hinges are properly seated in their holes and make sure you’re not using screws that are too long. Sometimes applying too much force can cause the screw holes to strip. Is the hole on the outer part of your shelf slightly damaged? You can also try opening the door fully, as hinge mechanisms often have small adjustment washers allowing more precise tuning.

What tools do you have at the moment? A small Phillips screwdriver is usually enough. It also helps to have some skill and patience. If the door is severely misaligned, you might try loosening the hinges, realigning the door, and then gradually tightening the screws again. Are there any uneven spots on the floor where the shelf stands? Uneven surfaces can affect the way the door hangs.

Exactly, do not force the screws. Each screw requires a slight directional adjustment, and you will quickly notice which screw needs to be turned until the door is properly aligned.

Bamar, I completely understand your frustration. I also spent quite some time fiddling with my BILLY doors before they fit properly. The important thing is not to get discouraged—it’s often a bit tricky. What helped me was turning each screw very carefully one at a time and regularly checking how the door was sitting. The depth adjustment is especially tricky because if the door hangs too far forward or backward, it won’t close properly. Try opening the door almost all the way and then adjusting it—that often gives you more room to maneuver. And once you get a feel for your shelving unit, fine-tuning becomes actually quite enjoyable. 🙂

The hinges on BILLY shelves can typically be adjusted using three screws: horizontal, vertical, and depth. Turn each screw slowly and check the door position after each adjustment. The setting is optimal when the door closes tightly against the cabinet and is flush with it.
