Hello everyone,

I recently bought the classic BILLY shelf from IKEA and am currently adjusting the doors for precise alignment. I’m encountering an issue where the hinges on the doors don’t seem to be fitting quite right—some doors are not flush, and others rub slightly.

My question is: How can I properly adjust the hinges on the BILLY shelf doors to achieve perfect alignment and smooth closing? Is there a quick, practical guide on how to adjust the screws to correct height, depth, and side positioning optimally?

I’ve noticed that these hinges have several adjustment screws but am unsure which screw controls which direction and how much to turn them without causing damage.

I would really appreciate concrete tips or a simple step-by-step guide.

Hello! I know how you feel – sometimes after assembling the cabinet, the doors just never seem to look quite right. With BILLY hinges, each screw actually serves a specific purpose:

- The front screw usually adjusts the depth, meaning how far the door sticks out from or sits inside the cabinet frame.
- The top screw controls the vertical position of the door.
- And the rear screw affects the horizontal alignment.

My advice is to take it step by step: start by slightly turning just one screw and then check the result. For me, starting with very small adjustments (a quarter turn) helped to avoid any misalignment. This requires some patience, but it’s worth it.

Don’t worry, the hinges are quite sturdy and you can always turn the screws back if needed. 🙂

That’s brilliant, thanks for the tip! 🙂 I can only confirm what DUUS32 says: patience pays off! I also adjusted my Billy doors and found it fascinating how each screw has a small but amazing effect!

For anyone who has never worked on hinges before: it’s best to use an appropriate Phillips screwdriver – I always use one with a finer tip to prevent slipping. And: don’t tighten too hard! The plastic bushings in the hinge don’t like it when you get too rough.

Good luck with the adjustments, I’m happy if my little motivation helped! 😀

Yes, here is a brief guide:

1. Close the door.
2. Turn the depth adjustment screw (usually at the front) until the door is flush with the frame.
3. Adjust the height screw (at the top) to achieve alignment with the ceiling.
4. Turn the lateral adjustment screw (at the back) to adjust the gap width between doors.

Test the effect after each step. Do not overtighten.

Hello ixbu8,

I would like to provide a more detailed response to your question, as adjusting BILLY hinges is an important topic for many.

The IKEA BILLY hinges are so-called clip-on hinges with three adjustment options:

1. Height adjustment: The upper screw on the hinge allows you to move the door vertically. If the door is hanging too low or too high, turn this screw until the height aligns properly.

2. Side adjustment: The side screw on the hinge moves the door horizontally, to the right or left. This helps if the gap between the door and the shelving unit is uneven.

3. Depth adjustment: Using a third screw, you can adjust the distance between the door and the shelving unit (forward or backward).

To make the adjustment easier, I recommend the following procedure:

- Close all doors.
- Start with the height adjustment, because a door that is positioned incorrectly often sits poorly and is difficult to adjust.
- Then perform the side adjustment to harmonize the gaps between the door, the shelving unit, and other doors.
- Finally, carry out the depth adjustment to ensure the doors close flush and don’t stick.

It is important to make only small turns and to close and check the door after each adjustment.

If the shelving unit is very crooked or the shelves are not perfectly level, it can be helpful to first align the unit using a spirit level. This makes hinge adjustment much easier.

I hope this helps you! 🙂
