Hello,

Over the past few days, we have poured our 60m² (645 sq ft) terrace using monocrete / drainage mortar.

Work is scheduled to continue in a week. All materials except the adhesive are ready. A single-component epoxy resin will be used between the joints.

How many kilograms of tile adhesive will be needed approximately for this area, and which one would you recommend?

Baumit construction adhesive for ceramic tiles and slabs on walls and floors, for indoor and outdoor use? PCI CM 117 flexible thin-bed mortar, 25 kg (55 lbs), grey? PCI Carrament 25 kg (55 lbs), grey, 3342?

My mistake. PCI Pavifix is being used, which is a jointing mortar for paving stones.

Any tips for adhesive? I will probably order PCI Carrament now.

We were also offered to have the ceramic tiles fully glued onto drainage mortar. All landscaping contractors stated that for several years now it has no longer been allowed to lay 2cm (approximately 0.8 inches) thick ceramic tiles on a gravel bed. What I don’t understand is the purpose of the drainage concrete if the tiles are ultimately fully glued on top of it. Is there a logical explanation for this? Part of our terrace will be covered by a glass roof, while another part will be practically exposed to the weather, so this topic concerns us as well.

@ "Allthewayup":

Ceramic tiles or slabs, as well as precast concrete stone slabs, according to DIN 18560 parts 1 and 2, only achieve sufficient load-bearing capacity starting at a material thickness of 40mm to 45mm (1.6 to 1.8 inches). At this thickness, a rear-side adhesive layer is not necessary. This allows for installation methods such as elevated construction or on a fine gravel (grit) base.
In these cases, a drain screed naturally makes sense, since the different construction layers, combined with open joints, can reliably drain surface water.
If we want to read the fine print in a document (as a metaphor), we don’t put on black glasses.
It is similar with a waterproof layer (such as a cementitious adhesive bed) above a drain screed.
