Hello,
we are currently considering building a new house, and I have just learned that besides the additional costs when purchasing a plot of land and the usual monthly utility costs for energy, water, waste, etc., there is also the so-called property tax...
The calculation doesn’t seem straightforward and varies depending on the location, but is it theoretically possible that this could amount to several hundred euros per month?
We plan to build about 160 sqm (1,720 sq ft) of living space over two floors on a 700–900 sqm (7,535–9,688 sq ft) plot in North Rhine-Westphalia (Essen, Wuppertal) – I hope I might have made a mistake somewhere in my calculations... If not, this could really be a dealbreaker for many, since that would mean substantial additional costs?

We don’t have household contents, but we are still saving on the side... although I have to admit that with these interest rates, it’s hard for me not to use the money for something else. On the other hand, I’m even less motivated to look for the TAN list for the overnight money account, so for now, it just stays there.

We are saving money on the side... although I have to say it’s hard for me not to use the money elsewhere given the interest rates. On the other hand, I’m even less motivated to look for the annual percentage rates (APY) for the money market accounts, so for now it just stays there. Household contents insurance costs very little in proportion; saving is fine, but in my opinion, this is the wrong area to cut back.

Caspar202016 May 2016 09:40@BeHaElJa: And what about the natural hazard insurance?
I believe that insurance should cover existential risks and not serve as a cushion for minor issues. I don’t understand how damaged furniture or one or two broken windows could threaten my livelihood. But please explain where I might be mistaken.
Natural hazard damage is covered.

Caspar202016 May 2016 09:46Small smoldering fire. Smoke gases penetrate wallpapers, furniture, and clothes. Everything has to be replaced. Typical damage cost in a single-family house: 80,000€–120,000€.
And the house is uninhabitable for 1 month.

Happens more often than you might think, for example due to carelessness or a technical fault (toaster, battery charging).
