Hello,

My wife and I are currently planning to build two semi-detached houses. We intend to live in one of the semi-detached units ourselves, while the other one should be split into two separate apartments. We would like to accommodate our parents in each of these apartments. Is this feasible? This means that the second semi-detached house would need to contain two fully independent apartments—one on the ground floor and the other on the first floor, for example. Additionally, this semi-detached house would require something like a stairwell, since each apartment should have its own entrance door, unlike our own semi-detached house, which effectively has just one main entrance door.

So the question is whether such a setup is possible, and what approximate total costs one should expect.

Best regards

Why should that not be feasible?
That is what architects are for.
Unfortunately, I cannot comment on the price.

Everything is possible, but the question is whether it makes sense. Basically, semi-detached houses are designed so that one dwelling spans two or three floors.
If two separate apartments are to be created, one challenge is providing independent access to the upper floor. In addition, in a semi-detached house, the ground floor usually contains the kitchen, dining area, living room, hallway with staircase, and guest toilet. If you also want to include a bathroom and a bedroom, the space becomes very tight and fragmented.

We used to live in a semi-detached house, with the parents upstairs and us downstairs.
It was a bit tight, 55 square meters (592 square feet) upstairs and 56 square meters (603 square feet) downstairs, and the rooms were quite small.
It's best to consult an architect.
