Hello dear experts,

we have purchased the plot and are now planning the construction of our second detached single-family house.

The house will have an apartment in the nearly exposed basement and above that, on two or three floors, a large apartment. The basement is only dark on the street-facing side. We aim to achieve at least KfW 70, possibly even KfW 55. Now there are many options to consider, but currently I am wondering which type of masonry unit is the right one. Based on my research, only a perlite-filled Poroton brick or a sand-lime brick with an insulation value remain as options. What would you advise?

I get the impression that a monolithic structure is better, but I am concerned that afterwards I might not be able to drive a nail into the wall. And how do the price differences compare?

Many thanks in advance, Sportiv

This "Jehovah" topic has already been discussed several times here; try the search function and you will find a lot of input.

Basically, for a two-family house, stronger soundproofing must be considered compared to single-family house construction, and an external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS / exterior insulation) does not necessarily have to be made from Styrodur (extruded polystyrene); perlite-filled hollow bricks also have their pros and cons like any other brick. No one can really advise you here because the choice of brick depends heavily on personal preferences. I can only tell you how we solve such questions when a monolithic build is basically desired.

We are currently building a two-family house in the Neuß district; the outer shell is made of 36.5cm (14.4 inches) aerated concrete, and all interior walls are made of sand-lime brick (thickness according to structural requirements); the owners have consciously decided against external insulation (ETICS).

Kind regards

Hello building expert,

I have already searched here, but it’s difficult. Obviously, it’s also a matter of personal preference. I don’t want to use Ytong. My favorite is Poroton with perlite. I wonder which type of brick is recommended here. Somehow, the bricks with better insulation properties are supposed to have disadvantages as well. Is it advisable to stick with a T9? Or is a T7 actually better? What are the price differences like?

Good luck,
