ᐅ Is a ceiling height of 2.40 meters with recessed spot lighting sufficient?

Hello everyone,

I am currently renovating a house and we are now considering the lighting and how to implement it. Our rooms currently have a height from the top of the screed to the bottom of the ceiling plaster of 2.50-2.53m (8 ft 2 in – 8 ft 4 in). To properly install recessed LED spots, it seems necessary to lower the ceiling by about 70mm (3 inches). When the floor covering is installed, another 15-20mm (around 1 inch) will be added in height. So, in the end, you can expect a clear height of about 2.40m (7 ft 10 in).

Now the question is: Is that enough to feel comfortable? This applies to three rooms of 10-20sqm (108-215 sq ft) on the upper floor, as well as a large room combining living, dining, and kitchen areas. I am looking forward to your opinions.

Thanks in advance!

There are also lamps that achieve the same effect as recessed spotlights but, in my opinion, look better in living areas. This way, you don’t need to lower the ceiling.
For example:
White dome surveillance camera on wooden panel wall indoors.

They can rotate in all directions, allowing for different "angles."

Thank you in advance for your answers. There is only a necessity in the guest toilet and entrance hall, as new wastewater pipes will be installed there. It would simplify the routing of the electrical cables, but the main reason would have been the spotlights.
What options are there for lighting large and small rooms?

If I were you, I would visit a large lighting store to see what options are available. They usually offer advice as well. If the budget allows, you could also consider involving a lighting designer...

Choose recessed spotlights with a shallow profile. For this, 24mm (1 inch) battens plus standard drywall panels are sufficient. So, no total thickness of 40mm (1.6 inches) is needed.

I would not use recessed spotlights, but rather surface-mounted spotlights.

I have temporarily screwed a few roof battens measuring 24x48mm (1x2 inches) to the ceiling as a test. I think I could live with this height compromise using shallower and (slightly) more expensive recessed lights. But, as is often the case with existing properties, there’s always something new. While attaching the battens, I noticed that the ceiling is somewhat uneven. There is a bulge that slopes downward about 20mm (0.8 inches) over a length of 2m (6.6 feet). This is somewhat visible on the battens. Now I’m wondering: can I screw drywall panels onto this without them being damaged over time? I am aware that the ceiling won’t be perfectly flat as a result.
