Hello forum community,

We have two construction companies competing, both building with Poroton and external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS).
Company 1 uses 18 cm (7 inches) blocks plus ETICS.
Company 2 uses 24 cm (9.5 inches) blocks plus ETICS.

My question is, how significant is the difference? Are there any disadvantages to the 18 cm (7 inches) blocks? Or does that option provide better insulation?

Thank you!

Best regards

If there is a reinforced concrete ceiling on top of 18cm (7 inches) aerated concrete blocks, I wouldn’t feel comfortable staying inside.

This is about Poroton. Not aerated concrete.

Hello,
there are many different types of Poroton bricks with varying thermal and sound insulation properties. Without specific information, it’s difficult to give you a precise answer.
Generally speaking: for an 18cm (7 inch) wall, simple hollow bricks are probably used; for a 24cm (9.5 inch) wall, I would guess T14 to T18 bricks. Ultimately, the thermal insulation is provided by the external insulation system anyway, so the brick itself is less important for thermal performance.
However, hollow bricks will offer better sound insulation, but you won’t be able to hide downpipes or drainage pipes inside an 18cm (7 inch) exterior wall — you would have to create soffits or boxed sections immediately.

We used 24cm (9.5 inch) T14 bricks with external insulation. If I were to build again, I would choose 24cm (9.5 inch) hollow bricks. They are cheaper and, thanks to their greater mass, provide better soundproofing.

Best regards,
Andreas

Thank you in advance for your answers. Unfortunately, I cannot specify the exact bricks. One of them is labeled: "Hollow clay brick... manufactured according to the applicable standards. Wall thickness = 24cm (9.5 inches)." The other one is "porous hollow clay brick." One is from FIBAV and the other from Heinz von Heiden. Best regards

Right, I misread that. Yes, it’s a different matter.
