ᐅ $13,000 to replace an old shower and bathtub?

Hello everyone,

maybe someone can give me some advice. It’s about a rather small bathroom where the bathtub and shower need to be replaced, along with the related tiling work.
I received a quote from a company for just under €13,000, with almost €9,000 being labor costs.
That can’t be normal—complete bathrooms can be built for that price. The problem is that work has already started because we had water damage, but no one could have expected such a price. Or is this normal?
Looking forward to your experiences.

Thanks and sunny regards

Of course, the completed work will be paid for, but the follow-up contract doesn’t have to be awarded. My basic question is whether this is normal or if I should better hire another company for the remaining work.

I understood that the company is already in the middle of their work.
No one here can really tell you what the “right” decision is, as it depends on many different factors.
Continuing with this company is probably the easiest option, but apparently quite expensive. Will you regret the cost or possibly mediocre performance afterwards, or will you just accept it and be glad when it’s all over? Everyone is different.
You can probably see my approach from what I wrote earlier, but I still can’t tell you how things will develop afterward.
I really dislike such situations and feel poorly treated as a customer, which is why I’m willing to accept the inconveniences of a different solution if necessary, even if it’s not always easier. On these “detours,” however, I have also met tradespeople I still enjoy working with today.

@bunnee82 Keep us updated. I always find this kind of information interesting and especially helpful for homeowners. And don’t worry: everyone here has made mistakes during their build that they would like to do differently next time.

Then try answering those questions for yourself.

Then why don't you answer the questions directed at you?
“Wow, thanks for your enlightening words – it’s just a pity that they don’t help anyone. But hey, at least you got to feel important for a moment. Maybe next time you’ll even manage to provide some substance.”

I have decided to pause the work for now until I get a second cost estimate from another company. My research shows that this usually costs between 3500-5000 € (approximately $3800-$5400), and since my bathroom is not large, I’ll take the mid-range as a guideline. That would make the current quote three times higher... That’s insane! I’ll be sure to share the results once I hear back!

Just a quick question. Have you reported the water damage to the insurance company? Does the contractor know about it as well? I had a leak detector sent by the insurance back then. The prices were quite high, for example, a construction dryer for 300 euros per week.
