Hello everyone, I have a question specifically about the functionality and long-term maintenance of my IKEA Besta drawers. I have noticed that over time the smoothness of the drawers decreases, with occasional sticking movements or difficulties when opening and closing, which obviously affects comfort and usability significantly.

My question is quite specific: What measures, such as maintenance, cleaning, adjustment, or the use of special lubricants, are truly recommended to keep the drawers in the Besta series in good condition over the long term? What typical weak points should be considered, and how can mechanical wear be best prevented?

I have read that the drawer slides can sometimes cause issues, but I am looking for practical advice that is also easy to apply for non-professionals. Who has experience and can provide detailed help?

Hello Frari, your question about the long-term maintenance of IKEA BESTA drawers is very well posed and provides a good basis for a detailed answer.

Basically, the smooth operation and functionality of the drawers rely on the installed runners, the roller wheels or guiding system, and of course regular maintenance.

First of all, I recommend systematically going through the following for maintenance: - Fully extend the drawers and check for damage (cracks or broken parts that could interfere with the guidance). - Clean the drawer runners. Dust, small particles, or even hair can accumulate in the runners over time, causing friction or blockages. A dry brush or compressed air can help. - Lubrication is an important point: You should use silicone-based lubricants, as these attract less dust than traditional oils or greases and do not damage the plastic parts. Do not use WD-40 or similar penetrating oils, as these are often not long-lasting and can damage the plastic glides.

Typical weak points are mainly the plastic glides in the runners as well as the small spring mechanism that ensures the drawer locks properly. If these parts are damaged, they need to be replaced – IKEA generally sells spare parts without any problem.

Mechanical wear can be prevented by not overloading the drawers, i.e., not exceeding the maximum load capacity specified by the manufacturer. In addition, sudden or jerky movements should be avoided, and the drawers should not be pushed against closed doors.

Regarding adjustment: Some BESTA models allow slight lateral or vertical adjustment of the drawer front, which helps keep the drawer running properly – occasional readjustment is recommended if the alignment changes.

If you like, I can send you a detailed guide for removing and maintaining the drawers, in case you want to check the runners.

Frari, the most important thing is to clean and use a silicone-based lubricant. It is sufficient to regularly remove dust from the tracks and apply lubricant sparingly.

If the drawers stick, also check whether they are properly installed and if anything is bent.

I can definitely understand how frustrating it is when drawers stop sliding as smoothly as they did in the beginning. I had a similar experience with my BESTA drawers, and it really annoyed me.

I noticed the same thing — the plastic parts actually wore out over time. At first, I wasn’t sure if I could fix it since I’m not very experienced with DIY projects, but replacing the damaged parts was surprisingly easy.

What helped me was carefully removing the drawers and cleaning everything thoroughly. Then I installed new plastic runners and applied silicone-based lubricant. Since then, everything runs much more smoothly.

Another useful tip: it’s important not to overload the drawers, as that can quickly damage the mechanism. Maybe setting a few personal guidelines for how to use them could help prevent this?

To maintain the BESTA drawers:
- clean regularly, removing dust and dirt
- lightly lubricate with silicone spray or Teflon spray
- do not overload the drawers
- if they stick, check if the runner is bent

This is usually sufficient; nothing more is needed.
