Hello everyone, I wanted to ask the group: Which tools are particularly helpful for disassembling IKEA Hemnes furniture?

I plan to take apart a HEMNES bed and a wardrobe to make them easier to transport. I’m not sure which tools are most effective—especially since the HEMNES series often uses wooden dowels, screws, and connectors. Is a regular Phillips screwdriver sufficient, or would a cordless drill with specific bits, or maybe even a special lever tool, allow for faster and easier work?

Additionally, I’m curious if any tools not typically intended for furniture assembly have proven useful here—such as small multifunctional tools or specialized clamps. I want to proceed carefully to avoid damaging the furniture or fittings.

What has been your experience? I’m looking forward to your insights, thanks in advance!

As tools, I recommend a cordless screwdriver with a Phillips bit. This is ideal for most of the screws in the HEMNES. Additionally, a rubber mallet is useful for gently loosening wooden dowels. Also, a small putty knife can come in handy for prying off moldings or panels.

Hello Roland50, I’m happy to build on your detailed introduction and offer a short guide on which tools are especially suitable for disassembling IKEA HEMNES furniture.

1. Cordless drill with interchangeable bits: This is the most important tool. Most screws are Phillips (PH2), sometimes also Allen (hex) screws. A powerful but finely adjustable cordless drill helps prevent damage to the wood caused by excessive torque.

2. Screwdriver: For final adjustments or screws in hard-to-reach places, I recommend a solid Phillips screwdriver. While an electric driver is faster, imprecise handling can leave marks.

3. Rubber mallet: Useful for gently tapping apart components connected with dowels. Tap carefully to avoid damaging the furniture surface.

4. Spatula or flat plastic wedges: Needed to slightly lift moldings or edges without causing damage.

5. Pliers or combination pliers: Can be handy for hooks or metal connectors.

Avoid sharp metal tools that could scratch the wood.

Summary: A good cordless drill as the main tool, complemented by hand tools like a Phillips screwdriver, rubber mallet, and plastic wedges, leads to the best results. Also, the order in which screws are loosened is important to prevent stress on the wood.

Thank you for the helpful tips shared so far. I often notice, especially with older HEMNES parts, that screws can sometimes be over-tightened or slightly misaligned.

I couldn’t agree more. I once used a cordless screwdriver with too much power and ended up damaging a few screws, which was quite frustrating for me afterward.

What I’d like to add: a right-angle attachment for the cordless screwdriver can be very useful for some hard-to-reach corners. This makes it easier to work behind cabinet backs or in tight spaces. Also, I’ve gotten into the habit of being especially careful with anchored wooden dowels, preferring to tap gently and patiently rather than pry, to avoid cracking.

Perhaps the combination of a low-torque cordless screwdriver, right-angle attachment, and a soft rubber mallet is the ideal solution.

A practical addition to the toolset for disassembling IKEA HEMNES furniture:

- A cordless drill with adjustable torque control is essential to prevent damage to the materials.

- Phillips screwdriver bits with a phosphor coating in various sizes ensure a secure grip on the screw heads.

- Plastic wedges or plastic spatulas are preferable to metal tools when it comes to loosening connections without damaging surfaces, due to their material properties.

- A small rubber mallet is useful for removing wooden dowels.

- Optional: An angle or articulated attachment for the cordless drill can improve accessibility in tight spaces.

Tools such as screwdrivers with magnetic tips help prevent screws from being dropped. Be careful with hammers and metal levers: they increase the risk of damage and should only be used with caution.

For disassembly, it is also recommended to follow the order of steps as outlined in the IKEA instructions—this reduces structural stress on the furniture piece.

Hello Roland50, I wanted to elaborate a bit more on the discussion because there are some important details to keep in mind when disassembling the HEMNES:

1. Preparation:
- Set up a large enough workspace so that parts don’t get lost.
- Sort screws and fittings during disassembly. Small storage boxes can help.

2. Tools:
- As others have mentioned, a cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque is the best choice. The HEMNES often uses wood screws that can’t be removed with too much force without causing damage.

- Phillips bits (PH2) should be of good quality, not cheap. Low-quality bits wear out quickly and round off screw heads.

- A rubber mallet makes it much easier to loosen wooden dowels. Tip: Tap not only on the dowel but also on the surrounding wood surfaces to loosen the material evenly.

- A spatula or plastic wedge is very helpful for loosening glued joints or carefully lifting molding.

3. Procedure:
- First loosen all screws, then gently tap out the dowels. Never pry with force, as wood can easily split.

- If the furniture parts are firmly stuck together, a small flat chisel (used carefully) can help create targeted gaps.

In the end: patience and respect for the material are essential.

Good luck!
