Hello everyone, I have a Kallax shelf from IKEA that I mounted on casters because I like to move it around the room flexibly. Unfortunately, the entire shelf rolls away even with the slightest touch or vibration, which is quite annoying, especially when it’s loaded.

My problem now is: How can I prevent the shelf from rolling away from light bumps or touches without completely removing the casters? Is there a way to lock the casters or another trick to keep the shelf securely in place when I want, but still be able to move it when needed?

I would appreciate practical, easy-to-implement solutions that do not compromise the shelf’s stability.

Most IKEA Kallax casters do not have built-in locks. My tip: replace the casters with ones that have brakes, which are available at hardware stores or online and are easy to install.

I understand the issue. To make the shelf movable yet stable, I would recommend the following: 1. Install locking brakes on the casters for secure hold. 2. If the existing casters don’t have brakes, you can purchase so-called “caster brake clips” that attach to the axle. 3. Use felt pads or non-slip mats under the feet for additional stability. 4. Ensure the casters are properly secured so they don’t wobble. In summary: The shelf should not roll freely when no force is applied if brakes or stoppers are installed.

As a supplement: IKEA Kallax casters are usually simple plastic wheels without a braking mechanism. An optimal solution is to use casters with a locking brake, preferably with a metal axle and a rubber tread, which provide better grip. Alternatively, retrofit brake clamps for axles are available. It is important that the locking brake only engages when the shelf unit needs to be fixed in place—otherwise, the caster should remain freely movable. If the shelf stands on a smooth floor, using a mat with a PVC or rubber surface is also recommended to further prevent rolling.

I would like to address the load exerted by the shelf and its contents. The heavier the shelf, the more force is required to set it in motion. It’s possible that your shelf is still too lightly loaded, causing it to roll away with the slightest touch. Adding targeted weight to the bottom, for example with weights on the lowest shelf, can make the unit more stable. Additionally, firmly tightening the nuts on the casters helps prevent unnecessary movement.

I would first check the casters to see if they are suitable for your flooring. Sometimes, hard plastic casters can be too slippery on smooth laminate. Appropriate casters with rubber tread dampen the rolling motion and improve grip.
