Hello everyone, I have a Malm dresser from IKEA, and I want to replace the drawer handles. I no longer like the existing handles and have ordered new ones that I would like to install. My question is: What is the best way to change the handles without damaging the drawers? Which tools do I need exactly, and are there any important points to consider, such as screw length or thread type? The drawer front is made of particleboard with a foil finish. Thank you very much for any helpful tips!

Unscrew the handles, realign the new ones, then screw them back in. Usually, you only need a Phillips screwdriver. Make sure the screws are not too long, otherwise they will penetrate through the interior wall.

Hello Oralplo,

to properly replace the MALM drawer handles, I recommend the following procedure: First, remove the old handles by unscrewing the screws from inside the drawer using a suitable Phillips screwdriver. It is important to completely remove the drawer from the chest of drawers to get better access to the screws and to avoid compromising the stability of the front panel.

Regarding tools: A medium-sized Phillips screwdriver is ideal. Sometimes the screws are machine screws with a nut-like thread, so have pliers ready just in case. Also, you should measure to check whether the new handles are compatible with the existing drill holes. IKEA usually uses a hole spacing of 128 mm (5 inches) for MALM handles, but this can vary.

Regarding screw length: The screws should be neither too short, as the handle will not be secured properly, nor too long, as this could damage the thin back panel or scratch the inside of the drawer. Often, 25 mm (1 inch) screws are suitable for MALM drawers, but this depends on the handle model.

For the installation process: Make sure the handles are precisely aligned, for example by using a measuring tape or caliper. Also, be careful not to tighten the screws too much to prevent cracks in the laminate coating. A small tip: if you want, you can place small plastic washers under the screw heads to protect the surface.

Feel free to get in touch if you have unclear drill holes or other questions.

Hello Oralplo,

I would like to add to GUSTAVO56’s advice with a brief guide on how to safely replace drawer handles, as this topic is often underestimated.

1. Remove the drawer: Pull the drawer out completely and place it on a stable, flat work surface. This prevents unwanted movement.

2. Loosen the screws: Use a suitable screwdriver (usually a Phillips PH2) and slowly and evenly loosen the existing screws to avoid damaging the wood or veneer.

3. Remove old handles: If the handles are firmly attached, avoid scratching the surface. If needed, carefully pry them off with a plastic wedge.

4. Check the screws: Verify the length and thread type of the screws supplied with the new handles. Ideally, they should be compatible with nuts or threaded rods.

5. Align new handles: Pay attention to the correct hole spacing (usually 128 mm (5 inches) for MALM) and carefully insert the screws. Double-check the position using a ruler.

6. Tighten screws: Tighten the screws evenly with the screwdriver, but avoid over-tightening to prevent the particle board from tearing out.

7. Test: Slide the drawer in and out to ensure the handles are firmly fixed and the drawer works smoothly.

Tip: Place a thin cloth or foam pad under the drawer to protect it from damage during the replacement process.

If you are unsure about the screws, you can take the old ones to a hardware store and have them compared there.

Good luck, and feel free to ask if you need further help with any of the steps!
