Hello everyone,

I have a specific question regarding the Ikea Malm furniture series: Are there alternative replacement parts or compatible components available when original parts are no longer obtainable or are too expensive? I am particularly interested in drawer slides, handles, and fittings, as I have encountered situations where a replacement part was damaged and I could not get the original part anymore.

I understand that Ikea often uses custom dimensions, but are there third-party suppliers or compatible standard parts that can be used instead?

If so, how well do these replacement parts work in practice? Do they require a lot of adjustment, or are they ready to use right away?

I would appreciate any tips on sources, fit accuracy, and experiences with similar projects.

That is really an interesting question, especially since Ikea uses some specific dimensions for Malm that are not always 1:1 compatible with standard hardware.

I guess with drawer slides, for example, you often deal with so-called Metabox or full-extension slides, which are quite universal. But since Ikea also uses thinner panels in Malm, mounting can be problematic if the replacement part doesn’t fit exactly.

Without knowing the exact measurements, I would say that third-party replacement parts can be an option, but they are definitely not always 100% plug and play. Some adjustment or modification often needs to be expected.

I’m also curious: Has anyone in this thread already had experience with alternative replacement parts for Malm?

I agree with that – and I actually think it’s a good thing! Because putting a bit of effort into DIY makes the work twice as enjoyable. 🙂

I once had a Malm chest of drawers where I wanted to change the handle. I simply used suitable handles from the hardware store. Of course, you might need to slightly adjust the drilling holes, but that wasn’t a big deal.

What I want to say is: for handles or small fittings, there are really many compatible replacement parts, especially if you’re flexible with the hole spacing. However, for drawer slides, I would measure more precisely since differences in material or length can quickly cause problems.

By the way, if you’re looking for inexpensive replacement parts, you can also check sites like eBay or Amazon, where there are often suitable sets for Ikea furniture from third-party manufacturers.

All in all: yes, replacement parts are available, and with some patience and basic craftsmanship, you can achieve quite a lot ;-)

To answer the question comprehensively, it is important to differentiate the components by function and design.

Drawer slides: Ikea often uses metal full-extension slides with bilateral runners in Malm drawers, which are not standard sizes. However, hardware available at general hardware stores frequently includes so-called Metabox or Tandem slides, which are often mutually compatible — although length or hole pattern positioning may differ. The result: a direct one-to-one replacement is usually not possible unless you either rebuild the drawer completely or modify it accordingly (redrilling, adjusting the cabinet runner). Especially with older models, it is therefore advisable to measure all dimensions precisely and, if needed, order the suitable part from furniture hardware or online fittings stores.

Handles: The hole spacing on Malm handles is usually standardized (mostly 128 mm (5 inches)), so you can often use alternative models not supplied by the original manufacturer. However, it is important to pay attention to the mounting style, as some handles are designed for thicker panels.

Fittings (hinges, dowels, connectors): This is often more critical, as Ikea uses custom connectors that are specifically matched in shape and size to their furniture. Replacement with standard connectors is possible but requires some experience, as the mounting holes can be positioned differently.

In conclusion, fitting replacement parts other than originals can work but requires patience, precise measurements, and sometimes some DIY adjustments. Some specialized shops focus on these types of replacement parts, and you can often achieve better results than by randomly purchasing parts at general hardware stores.

Therefore, a detailed inventory of the parts installed in your specific piece of furniture would be important to then recommend compatible replacement parts. Which parts do you need exactly? Are there issues with installation or function?
