Hello everyone, some time ago I bought a Kallax shelving unit from IKEA to use as a storage surface in the entrance area. Unfortunately, I’ve noticed that the surface on the boxes has developed some unpleasant scratches from occasionally placed keys. The plastic or melamine coating seems to be quite sensitive. My question is: Has anyone else had similar experiences with Kallax storage surfaces? How deep are the scratches, and how exactly do they occur? Are there practical ways to protect the surface from further damage – for example, special protective films, mats, or care products? I want to use the shelving unit for as long as possible without it becoming covered in scratches after a short time. I’m looking forward to your tips and experiences.

Hello floyago, I’m familiar with this issue and will explain clearly how you can deal with it.

Yes, the surface of Kallax is made from melamine-coated particle board. While it is quite resistant to moisture and stains, mechanical scratches from hard objects like keys unfortunately occur quite easily.

Here are some ways to protect it:

1. Protective mats or films: You can cut transparent adhesive film or an acrylic sheet to size and place it on the surface as a protective layer. This prevents direct contact with the sensitive finish.

2. Soft pads: A felt pad or small soft mat where you place your keys can help preserve the surface.

3. Maintenance: Melamine surfaces can be cleaned and polished with mild cleaning agents, but scratches usually cannot be removed, only minimized in appearance.

Avoid using aggressive cleaners that can damage the coating.

In summary: mechanical scratches from keys are almost unavoidable with direct contact. A protective layer or pad is the best prevention. Hope this helps!

That sounds really frustrating when you have a nice cabinet and you keep seeing damage on it.

I had a similar issue some time ago – in my case, it was also keys in the drawer that scratched the surface. I simply used a soft, self-adhesive felt pad. That really made a difference.

I know the solution isn’t always obvious, but adding a small barrier like that helped me avoid constantly seeing scratches and getting upset about the furniture.

Maybe a few small tricks like these can help you keep enjoying your Kallax. 🙂

Buy clear plastic film or an acrylic sheet for protection. Always place keys on felt.

I have to agree with that. The Kallax surfaces are not protected against sharp or pointed objects, such as keys or jewelry. In addition to the suggestions with films and mats, I recommend regularly cleaning the surface and removing dust, as small particles can increase the risk of scratches.

One option could be to use a lightly padded mat that is easy to clean, which helps prevent scratches from hard or sharp metal objects. Some users also report silicone mats as an effective protective material.

If the scratches are already there: They can usually hardly be made invisible, but you can restore some shine and improve the appearance of the surface with special furniture polishes.

I wish you the best of luck in solving the problem!
