Good morning everyone,

I plan to assemble the Ikea Brimnes shelving unit on my own and wonder if there are any specific risks I should be aware of.

The furniture consists of several parts that need to be put together according to the instructions, and I’m unsure if doing this alone could be problematic—such as the risk of incorrect assembly due to the complex manual, difficulties handling the individual pieces, or stability issues if certain steps are not carried out properly.

From your experience or a technical perspective, are there any critical points that must definitely be avoided when assembling the BRIMNES unit without help?

I would prefer not to risk damage to the furniture or flooring afterwards, nor compromise my safety during the assembly process.

Thanks in advance for your opinions and advice!

Hello pijo30,

first of all, an important point: Assembling the Ikea BRIMNES without help can certainly work, but there are some challenges to be aware of.

The BRIMNES unit usually consists of several large components, some of which are heavy wooden parts that can be difficult for one person to handle alone. This alone can lead to physical strain—especially back pain—or an increased risk of dropping parts accidentally.

Regarding the technical process: The assembly is generally well documented, but the individual steps require care and precision. Especially when using dowels and screws inserted into pre-drilled holes, it is advisable to align everything carefully, as misalignment can cause the furniture to become unstable.

I also strongly recommend securely attaching the back panel to ensure the necessary torsional rigidity. You should not rush this step, as the back panel can often be tricky, and without proper fixation, the entire structure will be unstable.

Do you already have experience assembling similar Ikea furniture, or is this your first project? Your individual situation regarding space and available tools may also be important.

A final recommendation: If you are working alone, allow yourself plenty of time, arrange all parts and tools clearly, and consider having help at least for the heavier assembly steps to avoid unnecessary risks.

Regarding the question of whether there are risks involved in assembling the Ikea BRIMNES without assistance, I can add that the biggest risk factor is actually the stability and correct following of the instructions.

- Misplaced screws or incorrectly inserted dowels can, in the worst case, cause the shelf to become unstable or even collapse later on.
- Additionally, careless handling can lead to scratches on the panels or damage to the surface, which is especially frustrating once the furniture is already assembled.

A methodical approach and careful checking of each assembly step are therefore essential. A tip: use a flat surface and carry out intermediate steps while referring closely to the instructions.

If you plan to complete the assembly entirely on your own, I recommend taking breaks during the handling of longer components to avoid fatigue and potential mistakes.

Another note: Although BRIMNES is not a complex piece of furniture like some large wardrobes, the temptation to rush or overtighten screws is present. This should really be avoided.

I fully agree. Additionally, I would like to mention that when assembling the BRIMNES, the installation of the drawer guide rails can be tricky if you don’t have a second person to hold and align the parts simultaneously. Without an extra hand, there is an increased risk that the drawer may get stuck or not operate smoothly afterward.

Furthermore, I recommend sorting the screws and components beforehand. Sometimes screws look very similar and can be easily confused by non-experts, which without assistance may lead to assembly errors and related problems.

To be specific: If you are building alone, pay special attention to

- always securing the furniture to a wall (if provided) to prevent tipping,
- not over-tightening screws, as this can damage the wood,
- checking dimensional accuracy during assembly to avoid later adjustments.

In short: risks mainly arise from user errors and handling of parts, not from the furniture itself.

Assembling the Ikea BRIMNES alone is indeed possible, but it raises some safety concerns.

For example, ergonomics: simply holding and positioning large parts by yourself increases the risk of muscle strain or minor injuries such as bruises or scratches.

Technically, the BRIMNES anchoring system is designed to be attached to the wall. Without assistance, placing the screws at the correct height can be difficult, especially if there is no second person to hold a spirit level or to secure the structure permanently.

Additionally, handling the drawer slides alone can be challenging. If they are not perfectly aligned, the drawer may be difficult to open or may hang unevenly.

Here are two tips:
- Plan the assembly in several stages over time to reduce errors caused by fatigue.
- If it’s not possible to have someone assist you, at least use clamps or small temporary supports on both sides to secure parts beforehand.

In conclusion: there are risks, but they can be minimized through careful preparation and a systematic approach.
