Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into the maintenance of the sliding rails on the Ikea Besta drawers and wondering about the best way to care for them in order to ensure smooth operation and long-lasting durability. The drawers still run fairly well but start to squeak and stick slightly under heavier loads and frequent use.

I am especially interested in which maintenance products are suitable for cleaning and then treating the slides. Should oily lubricants, silicone spray, or dry lubricants be used? What is the best method to clean the sliding rails without damaging the surfaces or mechanisms?

Are there any specific features of the Ikea BESTA drawers that should be taken into account?

I would be very grateful for tips based on personal experience or technical knowledge!

Hello Naribe,

regarding your question about how to properly maintain the sliding rails of the Ikea BESTA drawers, I would like to provide a more detailed answer because proper care is crucial for their lifespan and smooth closing.

First, it is important not to treat the rails with just any lubricant. Ikea usually uses metal ball or roller bearings with some plastic parts in the BESTA series.

1. Cleaning:
- Remove the drawer completely first to access all sides of the sliding rails easily.
- Use a lint-free cloth and a mild cleaning agent (e.g., vinegar water or soapy water) to remove dust, dirt, and grease residues.
- Make sure to dry the parts thoroughly afterward to prevent water from getting into the mechanism.

2. Lubricant:
For the sliding rails, I recommend using a dry lubricant or silicone spray, as these do not attract dust or cause the mechanism to stick. Oily or greasy products (e.g., WD-40 or regular oil) can attract dirt and worsen squeaking.

3. Application:
- Spray the dry lubricant sparingly and locally on the moving metal parts.
- After applying, move the drawer in and out a few times so the lubricant distributes evenly.

4. Special considerations for Ikea BESTA:
- Some plastic rails have integrated dampers that can be damaged if too much lubricant is applied.
- Therefore, it’s better to use the lubricant sparingly and follow the instructions in Ikea’s assembly manual.

Have you already tried cleaning or lubricating the rails? I am curious whether your squeaking is more due to mechanical issues (like bent parts) or dirt.

I hope this helps you!

This is a very important point. For Ikea BESTA drawers, I also recommend using dry lubricants based on silicone or special sprays designed for furniture runners. Additionally, make sure the sliding rails are free of stone chips, crumbs, or dust particles, as these can negatively affect movement and scratch the metal parts.

A thorough cleaning before lubricating is always advisable. However, avoid using harsh household cleaners, as some plastics may be damaged by them.

Clean the running rails simply with a slightly damp cloth, then apply a thin layer of silicone spray. Do not use oil, as it attracts dust. Repeat the process every 6-12 months.

Your tip is a good short summary. I would add that it’s best to remove the drawer completely before cleaning the runners. This way, you can often reach the back sides of the sliding rails, where dust and dirt tend to accumulate.

Additionally, with the Ikea BESTA drawers, the interaction between metal parts and plastic guides is often critical. If the plastic components are dry and brittle, dry lubricants usually won’t help much.

Have you checked your drawer openings for any damage or wear? If so, ordering replacement parts might be worthwhile before new problems arise.

I find this topic personally very important because I have experienced firsthand how annoying squeaking or sticking drawers can be.

What interests me most is: Which cleaning and treatment products are suitable for the drawer slides?

I have had good results with commercially available Teflon spray; it is very durable and does not attract dust. But be careful: apply only a very thin layer! If you use too much, the product quickly runs onto the inner edges of the drawers.

This information was new and very helpful to me because I had always underestimated the dampers on my BESTA drawers.

If anyone is unsure, it’s better to apply less lubricant and repeat the process more often. Especially when wear is not yet advanced, this is usually sufficient.
