EminkeoHello everyone,
I am currently planning the installation of the Ikea Metod kickboards in my new kitchen. I have a question about any specific installation tips for these kickboards to ensure a clean, stable, and visually appealing result. I have already seen the Ikea instructions but would like to benefit from your experiences. Are there any tricks regarding pre-drilling, alignment, or handling corners and uneven walls?
I want to avoid the kickboards wobbling or coming loose later on, and I find the installation a bit tricky, especially since the Metod system consists of modular elements. Does anyone have tips on cutting, fastening with clips or screws, or advice on which tools are particularly useful?
Thanks in advance for your advice!

I want to avoid the baseboards wobbling or coming loose later onHey Eminkeo, I know that all too well—it really depends on a secure fixing! A tip from me: baseboards work great with the original Ikea clips, which provide a solid hold and are easy to install. It’s important to align the clips precisely beforehand—you can use a good set square or a bevel gauge for that.
When cutting, a fine saw (for example, a Japanese pull saw) helps avoid splintering on the edges. If you get the length exactly right, everything will fit flush.
And of course, for corners, a miter cut is recommended to make the boards fit neatly together. If the walls aren’t perfectly straight, slight adjustments with sandpaper or minor filling work before mounting can help.
Enjoy the installation! 🍀

I would like to add that pre-drilling when installing Metod baseboards is really useful, especially if you are screwing directly into wood or other hard materials. This helps prevent splitting or cracking of the baseboard. Make sure the screws are not too thick and that the clips fit precisely – IKEA provides the measurements in the assembly instructions.
It is also important to adjust the height of the baseboards carefully. You can do this quite accurately with a spirit level and a spacer or a small assembly jig, ensuring the baseboards align evenly everywhere. For my kitchen, I was advised to fix the baseboard with small spacers to allow air circulation underneath – this helps prevent moisture damage over time.
Regarding cutouts and corners: if the walls are uneven, flexible sealing strips or small silicone or acrylic joints work well as a finish. This creates a neat visual result and allows the materials to move slightly without cracking.
If you need any more help, feel free to ask!

1. Preparation: Check and ensure the mounting surface is level. Compensate for any unevenness with filler or shims.
2. Alignment: Use a spirit level and mark a reference line at the height where the baseboard will be installed.
3. Pre-drilling: As previously mentioned, pre-drilling ensures clean screw holes and prevents splitting.
4. Fastening: Original Ikea clips are ideal; additionally, use screws when attaching baseboards to hard substrates.
5. Corners: 45-degree miter cuts are the standard and best method for inside and outside corners. A precise saw is essential here.
6. Finishing: Use white acrylic sealant for filling if necessary to accommodate movement.
Tools:
- Cordless screwdriver with torque control
- Miter box or miter saw
- Drill with appropriate drill bit
- Spirit level
This standardized procedure reduces potential errors and contributes to a clean result.

A tip from me: The baseboards can be easily fixed using the original Ikea clips, which provide good hold and are simple to install.I can confirm that, those clips are really practical. However, I had some issues with adhesion on older walls or surfaces that were not completely even. In those cases, I added small self-adhesive foam strips between the wall and the baseboard to reduce rattling and help the baseboard fit better.
In general, I also recommend having two people for installation – one holds, the other screws. This makes alignment much easier and helps avoid mistakes when tightening the screws.
Another small tip from my experience: Installing the baseboards at the end can improve the cleanliness and quality of the installation, as any slight shifts in the cabinet units can be adjusted before the baseboard is finally attached.
Sawing with a fine handsaw or a table saw ensures clean edges on the baseboards.
When drilling, always choose a drill bit that matches the screw diameter to prevent splitting.
Attach clips in the correct position, usually centered along the length of the molding.
Always cut corners at a 45-degree angle and check that they fit together well.
