ᐅ How can I retrofit soft-close mechanisms on IKEA Metod drawers?

RonaytenHello everyone, I have a question about retrofitting soft-close dampers on IKEA Metod drawers. I already have several Metod base cabinets with drawers that currently don’t have any damping. Since I would like to make the drawer closing quieter and smoother, I’m looking for a way to retrofit the existing drawer slides with dampers, ideally without having to replace the entire drawer slide. Are there proven damping solutions that are easy to install? Which products or methods would you recommend to significantly improve the closing experience? I’m especially interested in practical implementation, compatible damper models, and whether there are any technical requirements (e.g., specific drawer slide types, installation effort, tools needed). Thanks in advance for your help!
Hey Ronayten, great question! A few weeks ago, I decided to do exactly the same thing and really enjoyed retrofitting my drawers with soft-close! 🙂 There are special dampers that you can attach to the sides of the drawer or the drawer slide. It’s important to check which type of slide you have (full extension or partial extension). I used an affordable but very effective damper from a hardware manufacturer that was easy to install without major disassembly. If you’re interested, I can let you know later where I ordered them from! Just remember not to tighten the screws too much, or the soft-close function won’t work properly. You can do it!
For retrofitting damping systems on IKEA Metod drawers, I recommend first identifying the type of drawer slide. Metod often uses full-extension slides with special click mechanisms. For aftermarket damping, so-called clip-on dampers are suitable, which can be mounted on the drawer side or the slide. Some models require the drawer to be removed from the cabinet to install the dampers. It is also important to ensure compatibility with the existing rails and drawer size. Replacing the drawer slides with ones that have an integrated soft-close function is another option, although this requires completely dismantling certain components. The retrofit can be done with basic tools such as a screwdriver and, if needed, pliers. It is advisable to carefully study the installation instructions of the dampers, as incorrect installation can impair their function.
Hello Ronayten, I’d be happy to explain the details for a technically proper retrofit of soft-close damping on Metod drawers. Basically, there are two options: - Direct replacement of the drawer runner with a full extension runner that includes soft-close. IKEA sells these separately, but note that the entire runner is replaced. - Retrofit using clip-on or plug-in dampers, which are usually mounted on the drawer side panel. There are product variants from manufacturers like Blum, Hettich & Co. that are compatible with 16 mm (0.63 inches) or 19 mm (0.75 inches) drill holes on the narrow sides. Important: Be careful during installation, as different models use spring mechanisms whose pressure point needs to be precise for smooth soft-closing. Recommendation: 1. Measure your runner profiles. 2. Purchase a clip-on damper that matches those measurements. 3. Check whether the screw holes fit or if new ones need to be made. 4. After installation, the function should be tested multiple times. A potential issue is that IKEA runners sometimes have deviations, which can be corrected (e.g., by adding thin felt strips if the dampers fit a bit too loosely). If you like, I can provide exact product recommendations, as I have analyzed this in detail.

I’m particularly interested in whether you did it with the drawers removed or installed? Do you need any special tools or screws if IKEA’s original holes are not fully covered?

It’s recommended to carefully study the installation instructions for the dampers Absolutely, I had no issues following the instructions, but I would like an example of a suitable damper compatible with Metod.
And thanks, @kibutar, for your product recommendation offer – yes, please, I’d appreciate your expertise and would like specific model numbers or sources if possible. A brief note on common mistakes to avoid would also be helpful.
Alright Ronayten, gladly!
I recommend, for example, the BLUMOTION clip-on dampers, specifically model 973A1000, which is suitable for many Metod full-extension drawer slides. This part simply attaches to the drawer slide at a designated point; installation is possible without drilling since the IKEA Metod slides already have the necessary mounting points. The only tool you need is a Phillips screwdriver.
Potential issues:
- Incorrect positioning of the damper results in weak performance.
- Screws tightened too much or too little can limit functionality.
- Dampers with the wrong length or shape can catch or jam.
If your drawers have partial-extension slides instead of full-extension, installation becomes more complicated or impossible without a complete replacement.
Would you like me to suggest a few alternative models with price ranges? Also important: dampers from different manufacturers may have varying spring tensions, which affects the closing feel.
