Hello everyone, I have been struggling for a while with my IKEA Kallax shelf moving whenever I vacuum around it. On smooth floors, the shelf easily slips, which is not only annoying but could also damage the furniture. I’m now considering trying different solutions but wanted to ask you first: how do you prevent your Kallax shelf from shifting while vacuuming? Are there any special techniques, materials, or tricks that help keep the shelf in place? I look forward to your experiences and tips, including any suggestions for accessories or improvements to the base area.
I completely understand your frustration, janbritt. This issue is unfortunately more common than you might think. In my experience, attaching small, self-adhesive anti-slip pads to the four feet of the Kallax shelf has been very helpful. These pads actually prevent the shelf from sliding across the floor.
Sometimes redistributing the weight inside the shelf or placing heavier books or boxes at the bottom helps, as more mass provides better stability. Another idea is to put a non-slip mat under the shelf, similar to those used for carpets. I also think it’s important to be careful when vacuuming and guide the vacuum cleaner gently to avoid bumping the shelf unnecessarily. It can be quite tiring, but sometimes there’s no other way. 🙂

It's great that you brought up this topic, janbritt! 😊 I simply use small, rubberized felt pads under my Kallax shelf. They’re super easy to stick on and prevent the unit from sliding around when cleaning! You barely notice they’re there, and the floor doesn’t get scratched.
I can only confirm that; it really helped me a lot!
Sometimes I also use double-sided tape when the pads don’t stick well. It can be easily removed later if you move or want to slide the shelf somewhere else. This has really made everyday life easier for me, especially when my little whirlwind at home is handling the vacuum cleaner. ;-)

Hello janbritt,
I would like to suggest a more structured approach so you can systematically solve the problem of your Kallax shelf shifting while vacuuming:
1. Cause analysis: First, check if the floor is very smooth and slippery (for example, varnished wooden planks, tiles, or laminate). The smoother the floor, the more likely the shelf will slip.
2. Improve protection and grip:
- Use non-slip pads, such as rubber or silicone mats, placed under the feet.
- Alternatively, self-adhesive anti-slip pads designed specifically for furniture feet are available; these also protect the floor from scratches.
3. Add weight:
- Place heavy items (e.g., fully packed books) on the lower shelves. This increases floor contact and overall stability.
4. Adjust vacuuming technique:
- Avoid pushing the vacuum cleaner sideways against the shelf repeatedly. Instead, vacuum gently along the length and only touch the furniture minimally.
Common mistakes include overly smooth surfaces, uneven foot heights (e.g., if the feet are not uniformly resting on the floor), and uneven flooring. I also recommend checking the Kallax feet carefully. Sometimes there are slight deformities that encourage slipping.
If you like, I can also recommend links to suitable products. 🙂

That is usually enough. Simple, affordable, and effective. You just need to make sure they are the right size, otherwise they can come loose quickly.
