I recently installed the IKEA Besta system in my living room and am now considering how to color it in a way that makes it more lively and modern without appearing too bold or busy. By "lively," I mean a color scheme that adds more dynamism to the room while still fitting with the rest of the interior.
I’m unsure whether it’s better to work with contrasting colors, such as vibrant blue or deep red tones, or rather with soft, natural shades that might be combined with wood or gray hues. I’m also interested in how structural elements like doors with glass or mirror inserts can influence the color impact.
What color combinations or design ideas would you recommend to make the IKEA Besta system more lively without overpowering the room? Do you have any experience with paint finishes, films, or mixing and matching different IKEA fronts?
Thanks for your tips and suggestions!

Hey farfedor35! It’s great that you want to get so creative with the Besta system! 😊
I think often just a bold accent color on a few doors or drawers is enough to really bring the whole piece to life. For example, a bright yellow or turquoise as a single pop of color definitely catches the eye and is a lot of fun!
And if you’re feeling adventurous: mix the fronts! Some white ones, some colorful ones – that adds interest while still looking cohesive. Glass fronts or doors with textured glass can also create great effects by breaking up the light and giving the furniture a lighter feel.
Don’t worry about using too much color, as long as you coordinate the shades, it will look fantastic! Be bold and good luck, you can do it! 😄

When choosing colors for the IKEA Besta system, it is important to consider the size of the available space and its lighting conditions.
- In small or dimly lit rooms, light, neutral shades such as white, cream, or light gray are suitable to visually enlarge the area and create a friendly atmosphere.
- For added vibrancy, contrasting color accents can be effective, for example in the form of colored glass or acrylic fronts, which also provide a modern surface.
- When using strong colors, I recommend limiting them to a few modules to maintain a harmonious overall appearance and avoid overcrowding.
- Combinations of matte and glossy finishes can also add depth and make the furniture piece appear more dynamic.
In general, I suggest testing samples or color swatches in the room before making a final decision, to accurately assess their effect under different lighting conditions.

I think often just a strong accent color on a few doors or drawers is enough to make the entire piece of furniture feel much more lively. I agree, but it is important that the color accents correspond well with the overall room design. For example, a muted green or a warm terracotta pairs nicely with natural wood tones, making the Besta system not only vibrant but also harmonious.

When choosing bold colors, I recommend limiting them to a few modules to maintain a balanced impression and avoid overload. That is a crucial point: less is more, especially with a modular system like Besta. I would also suggest considering not only color but different front materials – for instance, a combination of matte painted doors and glass fronts. This adds a tactile liveliness that color alone sometimes can’t achieve.
Finally, a tip: especially with foil finishes, it’s worth choosing high quality to ensure the surface looks fresh for a long time and doesn’t develop an unpleasant shine.

What color combinations or design ideas can you recommend to make the IKEA Besta system more lively without dominating the room?I completely understand your desire to use the Besta system not only functionally but also as a way to create atmosphere in the room. For me personally, it helped a lot to choose color tones that evoke positive emotions—warm orange shades and muted blues work well for me.
It doesn’t have to be the entire front; targeted color accents are often enough to bring life and personality. I can also relate to feeling unsure about overly bright color combinations—using individual elements with interchangeable doors or inserts can help so you can change the look as needed.
It’s important that the Besta also meets practical needs and doesn’t distract or become an intrusive element because of too bold colors. So feel free to experiment and take breaks before making a final decision.
