Hello everyone,

I am planning to install optimal LED lighting in my IKEA Metod tall cabinets and am looking for practical advice and proven methods. Specifically, I would like to know how to position the LEDs to ensure even, glare-free illumination for the best lighting effect without affecting the cabinet’s interior design. Which types of LED lights (e.g., strips, panels, spotlights) are most suitable, what about the power supply, and how can simple control be implemented?

Additionally, it would be helpful to get recommendations on mounting materials, potential heat generation, and how to handle electrical safety aspects.

Does anyone have experience integrating LED lighting specifically in IKEA Metod tall cabinets? I look forward to your detailed tips!

Hello Kamideo,

There are several technical and practical aspects to consider when lighting Metod tall cabinets with LEDs. As a general recommendation, I suggest using flexible LED strips with a color temperature between 3000K and 4000K for warm white to neutral white light. This helps create a pleasant interior atmosphere.

Step 1: Planning the power supply
- Check how the power supply is provided inside the cabinet. While IKEA offers LED lights for Metod, DIY solutions usually require external power supplies that should be installed outside the cabinet.

Step 2: Installation
- The interior strips of the tall cabinets are well suited for mounting LED strips. Ensure an even adhesion by degreasing and thoroughly cleaning the surface first.

Step 3: Cooling
- LEDs generate some heat, although minimal; the aluminum base of the strips helps dissipate it. In enclosed cabinets, aluminum profiles can be used to prevent overheating.

Step 4: Control
- You can use standard 12V controllers with remote control or install smart systems (e.g., ZigBee, WiFi). Motion sensors are also useful to automatically turn on the light when the cabinet door is opened.

Could you please specify whether the cabinet has interior shelves or glass doors? This affects how strong or diffuse the lighting should be.

I hope this helps you as a first orientation.

Hello Kamideo,

I have now equipped several Metod tall cabinets with LED lighting and have some practical tips:

- LED strips work best on wooden shelves when you stick them under the shelves. This provides indirect, even lighting.
- For glass shelves, narrow LED profiles with an opaque cover are ideal, as they diffuse the light nicely.
- Cable placement is important. Use the back panel to route cables as invisibly as possible. Small cable ducts help a lot.
- A combination of sensor-controlled lighting and manual control (switch or remote) offers flexibility.

If you need help with the connection: Make sure to choose a transformer with a suitably dimmable output if you want dimming.

One last note: IKEA Metod often comes with pre-drilled holes for shelves. Sometimes you can use these to route cables to the back without extra drilling.

LED strips with 12V are easy to install.
Mount them under shelves, use aluminum channels for cooling.
Consider the power supply and use motion sensors for added convenience.

Make sure the adhesive is applied smoothly; it’s best to degrease and thoroughly clean the surface.

Absolutely correct. A clean surface is crucial; otherwise, the adhesive tape will come loose quickly, and the LEDs won’t stick reliably.

Here is a brief guide on how I proceed:

- Clean the surface well with isopropanol
- Let it dry
- Apply the LED strip evenly
- Press gently to secure after applying

Another tip: Make sure the LED strip is not bent sharply, as the internal LED tape can be damaged. When installing around corners, it’s better to use angle connectors.

Regarding control, I recommend combining a motion sensor with a dimmer so you can adjust the brightness as needed and save energy at the same time.

I would like to add that the choice of LEDs also depends on their placement within the Metod tall cabinet.

- For tall cabinets with doors, it is advisable to install LEDs on the upper inside surface, as this allows the light to illuminate the entire interior space.
- In very deep cabinets or those with many shelves, it may be useful to place LED strips in the gaps between the shelves to minimize shadows.
- For glass cabinets, it is worth using RGB or tunable white LEDs to adjust the lighting ambiance according to the display of the objects.

I have personally had bad experiences with cheap LED strips that caused flickering light or failed early. It is better to invest in high-quality branded products with good reviews regarding durability and color rendering.

How tall are your cabinets? Depending on the height, it might be beneficial to use LED panels instead of strips to create a more diffused effect without hotspots.
