Hello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of designing an IKEA Metod kitchen that is not only functional but also ergonomic and child-friendly. Specifically, I want to arrange and equip the cabinets in a way that allows adults to work comfortably without having to bend or stretch constantly, while also enabling my children to participate safely and age-appropriately in cooking or storing items.
I am particularly interested in the following: What are the optimal heights for base cabinets? How can I choose the interior fittings (drawers, inserts, waste systems, etc.) so that they remain practical for adults and allow children to be involved attentively but safely? Are there materials or accessories that are especially recommended for a child-friendly setup?
I would be very grateful for practical experiences, planning tips, and warnings about potential pitfalls. Thanks in advance!

Soft-close interior drawers are both ergonomic and child-friendly, as they reduce the risk of fingers getting caught. That’s an important point, thank you! When it comes to safety, I was also considering soft-close features and additional edge protection because my children are quite active right now.

Typical mistakes include drawers that are too tall for children and forgetting safety features on lower cabinet doors. Are there standard options or accessories in the IKEA Metod system that work well for these safety features? I’d prefer to avoid expensive add-ons and instead be creative within the existing product range.

I prefer to avoid expensive additional measures and instead be creative within the existing product range.Yes, IKEA actually offers some practical child safety solutions that fit well with Metod. For example, there is the "DIMPA" cabinet lock system, which is easy to install and does not require drilling.
For drawers, so-called "stoppers" can be attached to prevent them from being pulled out completely. This especially reduces the risk of heavy items falling out from deep drawers.
Furthermore, handles of a comfortable size and position are important. IKEA offers various handle models that are suitable even for smaller hands.
Another consideration is the use of adjustable shelves, which allow flexible customization of storage spaces, especially useful as children grow.
