Hello everyone, I recently got some IKEA Malm furniture for my small apartment, but I want to use it efficiently and keep it as neat as possible. Tidying up and organizing can be especially challenging in small spaces since storage and surface area are limited.

My question is: What methods or smart tips do you have for organizing Malm furniture so that it doesn’t overcrowd the room while making effective use of the storage space?

I’m particularly thinking about storage solutions for the drawers or cabinets, but also how to keep surfaces clear without sacrificing functionality.

I look forward to your experiences and suggestions!

A proven tip is to use transparent boxes or modular storage systems in the Malm drawers

That sounds very practical. Which materials work best here? Plastic, fabric, or wood? And how do you prevent the drawers from becoming too full or too heavy?

You can also attach hooks to the side of the Malm

Good idea – do you have examples of how to do this discreetly, without it looking bulky?

I love Malm furniture for small spaces because it is so simple and versatile! 🙂

My tip: Use small inserts and organize by function – it almost makes tidying up fun! Also, try magical adhesive surfaces that help fix things quickly but remain invisible.

And don’t get discouraged, a small room = a big challenge, but you can get a lot out of it! ;-)

Interesting question. Plastic is practical because of easy cleaning and durability, but it creates waste. Fabric is flexible but less sturdy and takes up more space. Wood or bamboo are more sustainable but bulkier and more expensive.

A conscious compromise is probably durable plastic made sustainably or from recycled material.

Also, it’s important to remember that organization depends not only on materials but also on regular maintenance.

I really like the idea of multifunctional surfaces. I use a removable felt cover on my Malm dresser, which I optionally combine with small trays. This makes the surface versatile, keeps it protected, and maintains a neat appearance.

Additionally, narrower boxes are ideal for drawers. This way, there is still some space left and the weight remains moderate.

I completely agree. A good system alone is not enough if you don’t consistently use it. Do you have any tips for routines or simple tricks to keep the organizing system in Malm furniture sustainable? I tend to overfill drawers until nothing fits anymore.
