Hello everyone,

I recently reassembled my KALLAX shelving unit after moving. I noticed that the shelf is now quite wobbly, even though I tightened all the screws properly.

My question is: does anyone have experience with whether it makes sense to replace the original KALLAX screws after moving?

I’m asking because I’m unsure if the screws lose stability after being assembled and disassembled multiple times, or if different screws (e.g., made from better materials or with a different design) might prevent the wobbling.

I look forward to your insights and tips, especially if anyone has actually replaced the screws and can share how that affected the stability!

In general, the original screws are usually well matched and appropriately sized for the construction. However, repeated assembly can wear down the threads, which may reduce holding strength.

Replacing the screws with high-quality substitutes can improve stability, especially at frequently used connection points. It is important to ensure that the length, diameter, and thread profile match exactly to avoid damaging the shelf.

If the shelf is wobbly, first check if any screw is loose. Replace only if the thread is damaged.

I’m familiar with this issue too – after moving, my KALLAX was initially quite wobbly.

It made me a bit uneasy, but after checking all the screws again and tightening them properly with the right screwdriver, the wobbling stopped.

Maybe this helps you a bit, as people often underestimate how important a secure and even fastening is.

Sometimes it can really take the fun out of things when furniture suddenly becomes unstable – keep your spirits up! 🙂

Hello Leero,

I recommend starting with a systematic approach: check all connection points and inspect whether the screws are truly tight or if the threads might be stripped.

The wobbly feeling often isn’t caused solely by screws but can also result from slightly bent edges or if the shelf isn’t perfectly level.

If you decide to replace the screws, I suggest using screws with the exact same specifications or asking a specialist retailer for furniture screws designed for this type of construction.

And don’t forget to test the shelf from both the front and the side after reassembly—sometimes the wobbling is noticeable only from one direction.

Technically, screws tend to suffer from thread damage after multiple assemblies, especially in chipboard furniture like KALLAX. These are secured using a combination of wood screws and dowels, which are designed to protect the material.

Replacing the screws may be necessary if the threads are damaged. A better option in this case would be to use new dowels and possibly screws of the same diameter but made from hardened material.

Important: Screws that are too long or too short can also negatively affect stability. Measure carefully before purchasing replacements.
