Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my Malm drawers from Ikea. One of the drawers no longer slides out smoothly; it sticks and doesn’t move easily. It also seems like the rail might be bent or the mechanism damaged. My question is: How can I repair Malm drawers? Which parts should I check specifically, and are there any tips on how to make the drawers run smoothly and stay stable again without having to replace them completely?

Thanks in advance for your experience and advice!

Hello,

with MALM drawers, the most common issue is actually a bent or dirty sliding rail. As a first step, I would recommend carefully removing the drawer and inspecting the rails for visible damage and dirt. Often, a thorough cleaning with a dry cloth to remove dust and sand particles is enough to fix any sticking.

If the rails are bent, you can try gently bending them back into shape using pliers, but be careful to avoid causing any breakage.

Another point is lubricating the rails. Using silicone spray or Teflon spray can help significantly improve smooth movement without attracting dirt, unlike oil.

Regarding the mechanism itself: if the quick-release or clips are damaged, they may need to be replaced. Ikea often offers spare parts online.

Oh yes, I’m totally with you on that! 🙂 I once had the same issue with a MALM drawer that was really hard to pull out. Cleaning the rails worked wonders for me! Adding a bit of silicone spray on top – that’s really great!

But be careful: never use regular oils, because that only makes things worse by attracting dust.

And a little tip from me: when the drawer is fully removed, check if the plastic rollers on the drawer are still in good condition. Mine had become a bit brittle, so I replaced them with small rubber buffers, which made the movement much smoother.

So, just take it step by step – it will definitely work! Good luck!

First of all, we should not simply assume that a bent drawer slide is the main problem.

That sounds superficially reasonable, but sometimes hidden defects in the mounting technique are to blame. The screws holding the slide to the cabinet wall can loosen or come out, causing misalignment and wobbling. Therefore, all attachment points should definitely be checked and tightened if necessary.

In addition, these drawers are relatively lightweight and made of wood fiberboard. This can also cause the wood to swell easily with moisture, which in turn can block the entire mechanism.

If you really want to repair it, also check the frame construction and the screws, not only the slides themselves.

Tightening the screws on the sliding rails is a good tip.

Also: If the drawer sticks, simply apply a light oil to the sliding rails (silicone spray) and carefully reinsert the drawer.

Avoid using oil or grease, as these attract dirt.

Hello Mefimi,

you have described the problem well, which makes it much easier to provide help.

Regarding the repair of the MALM drawers: It is important to completely remove the drawer and thoroughly inspect the runners and rollers. If individual rollers are broken or misaligned, Ikea offers replacement rollers that can be easily swapped.

That’s an interesting alternative, thank you! If you try this, I would be very interested to hear how durable it is.

In addition, make sure to regularly clean and lubricate the runners to ensure the mechanism works properly over time. If the drawers stick, it can also help to gently sand the strips at the bottom on the inside edges with some fine sandpaper—sometimes friction is the cause of the issue.

If you have problems with stability, check the strength of the side connections and fittings on the drawer sides, as this is often a weak point under heavier loads.
