Tobiasman23 Sep 2022 18:37Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a Malm bed and some other wooden furniture from IKEA and am wondering how to clean them properly and, most importantly, how often they should be treated for care.
I am specifically referring to the models with a wood surface or particleboard with wood veneer, not lacquered or plastic surfaces.
My furniture is in the bedroom, so not exposed directly to sunlight or moisture, but it still encounters normal dust and humidity levels. Should the wood be regularly treated with special oils or waxes, or is regular dusting and occasional damp cleaning sufficient?
How often can or should such furniture be maintained to protect the wood surface and prevent drying out or cracking? Are there any cleaning or care products that should definitely be avoided because they could damage the veneer?
I would appreciate experiences and as many specific tips as possible on how to properly clean MALM wooden furniture and how often it should be cared for. Thank you!

Hello Tobiasman,
Regarding your detailed question, I can share some practical insights as well as technical details.
First, it is important to understand that MALM furniture is often made from particleboard with a real wood veneer. The veneer is usually thin and coated with clear varnishes or films, depending on the model. Therefore, you should be very careful when cleaning.
Generally, it is sufficient to regularly wipe the surfaces with a soft, slightly damp cloth to remove dust. It is best to use only mild dish soap mixed with water and avoid harsh cleaning agents or solvents (e.g., alcohol, acetone, etc.), as they can damage the varnish or veneer.
For maintenance: With varnished surfaces, occasional polishing using furniture wax or special care oils suitable for varnished or veneered wood can help. This keeps the surface protected and looking fresh for longer.
For MALM furniture, a maintenance treatment every 3 to 6 months is usually sufficient. It is important not to apply too much product to avoid buildup that can cause unsightly deposits.
Regarding your question about drying out and cracking: MDF or particleboard with veneer is less prone to these issues than solid wood, as it is less hygroscopic. However, overly dry indoor air or direct sunlight can still damage wood veneer over time. Therefore, pay attention to humidity levels (ideal at about 40–60%) and avoid placing furniture directly next to heating sources.
If you have more specific information about your particular MALM model, e.g., whether it is oiled, waxed, or varnished, I can provide more precise recommendations!
Looking forward to your reply.

For MALM furniture, maintenance treatments every 3 to 6 months are usually sufficient.I fully agree and would like to add that cleaning should be done in several steps. First, remove dust gently with a microfiber cloth without applying much pressure, as the veneer is delicate. Then, damp wipe with a small amount of dish soap, just as described.
It is also important to apply care wax or oil exclusively with a soft cloth in very thin layers and polish afterwards, to avoid any residue that could later cause discoloration or become sticky.
I have personally had good experiences with products based on carnauba wax since they are very natural and do not add harmful additives to the veneer.
Avoid aggressive cleaners and also excessive damp wiping, as water can penetrate the veneer and cause swelling at the edges.
Overall, humidity, as kulau already mentioned, is crucial. A humidifier in winter can often help, especially if the heating air is too dry.
Do you have other surface types or varying usage intensities besides the MALM bed in your home? That would help to better assess the maintenance effort needed.
